It's a couple of percent - almost certainly no more than 5%.
Obviously atheists are not the ones causing America's problems. The right-wing media hype about a "secular society" is just propaganda.
If you think that atheists make up the majority of the United States population, you're shockingly ignorant of the facts. That's not very different from saying "Most Americans are taller than 7 feet".

Last time I checked, about 17% of the US population is atheist/non-religious/secular humanist/agnostic.
This does not take into consideration
a)People who were not polled,
b)The margin of error
A note to all the bigoted assholes. The asker didn't say, "What do you think of atheists?" They said, "What percentage of the US population is atheist?", and nothing more. If you're going to mudsling, take it elsewhere.

According to the demographics listed on Wikipedia:
15.0% of the U.S. population answered "no religion," "agnostic," or "atheist" in 2001, up from 8.4% in 1991.
I believe these are gleaned from the American Religious Identification Survey (ARIS) 2001.

Only the most educated are atheists, so it's probably a rather low percentage.

According to Sam Harris, something like 75% of the US population believes in Jesus. About 50% believe Jesus will return to Earth some day. About 25% believe that Jesus will return within their lifetime. So, that leaves about 25% atheist, agnostic, or whatever.

Atheists are as big a problem as Bible bangers.
The healthy mind is unaffected by religious nonsense, and though he may feel sympathy for those who declare "there is no god," and for those who make worship of a question mark an important part of their lives, he does not involve himself in arguing an issue for which there is not a shred of evidence that would hold up in a court one way or the other. He is satisfied with mystery.
