Hmmm great question. For me it depends on what other horses they were racing against. With the great mare's efforts in the last three years it has brought Phar Lap back to the field (especially with Lee Freedman's comments after the MC '05). For me I would choose Octagonal. He is very special to me because he was such a fighter, his record is amazing and lit the racing world alight when he was racing. Lonro has the award for best looking horse - beautifully black with attitude but sorry Ockie get's the prize - again.

Phar Lap was a great runner no doubt, but he's not the greatest horse in history. I'd have to say it's between Secretariat, Seattle Slew, Alydar and Ruffian. My sentimental vote goes to Ruffian. Lucien Laurin's vote would also be Ruffian if Mr. Laurin were still alive. "As God is my witness, she may be better than Secretariat." - Lucien Laurin on seeing Ruffian race.

No mention of Sunline? From those listed I must admit to being partial to Lonro. I believe he probably has the best win/itm % of those listed. With 26 wins twice placed and twice show from 34 starts that horse did not like to lose. Competing against such standouts as Sunline and Northerly I also think Lonhro faced tougher competition than some of the others listed.
