This bill was passed by the Congress, but not by the House. It was a win/win bill (in my opinion) because it (compromised) let immigrants and illegals a chance to work legally and eventually become citizens but also tightened immigration laws. Because it was not passed the other bill for building a 500 mile FENCE around the US/Mexico border was passed instead.
Which one are you against or for?

I find it sad that people would rather spend millions of dollars on a fence that won't be effective in the long run, while that same money could be spent on education and downsizing huge public schools. Now that would downsize crime and violence in public schools. A worthwhile cause? I think so, certainly better than building a fence. This is no longer the 10th century nor is this The Great Wall of China.

There is a big difference between legal and illegal immigrants and I should have made the question clearer.

I completely agree with you, it was a win-win situation. Besides, immigration is what has made this country the economic Juggernaut that it is as well as keeping us vital.

I do support this bill & I do belive that these 'illegals' should be given the opportunity to be here legally & to become citizens. It was a good compromise and Im hopeful that something like this will come down once the democrats take over!
People think of 'illegals' as drug dealing racists. What about my sister in law who came here as a teen in the 70's. Her parents came here legally (then the laws were different & they actually could!). However, by the time they had legal residencey she had turned 18 and is now illegal. She is married & has 2 kids and can not get legal residency because she is here as an 'illegal' We are talking about people lives here! Not criminals!

The fence is the most foolish idea I can imagine. What bothers me is that the same people who support this war seem also to support the fence. Home land security is supposed to pay for this fence, but to spend our money on that does NOTHING TO protect the actual or REAL sercurty of our nation. Remember the 9/11 terrerolrtits came thru Canada.

When you were a child and you did something wrong, what would think if, for punishment, your parents gave you a cookie or ice cream everytime you did wrong?

The problem is not with the 20 million illegals that came here after the first amnesty in 1986, it is what to do with the 40 million illegals that will come here after the proposed second amnesty. And then there is the question about the 80 million who will come here after a third amnesty until there is no room.

I do not believe anyone should be rewarded for breaking the law. There are millions and millions of people waiting in their home countries to come here legally. Any amnesty for the illegals makes those abiding by the laws as fools. It is unfair to them.

I realize that each illegal has a sad story. But they all came here voluntarily. And contrary to media articles, it is not because they could not find work in their home countries. It is primarily because they can make more money in the USA.

The major problem in the USA is the lack of respect for the law. This includes littering, jaywalking, bilking investors out of millions of dollars, drug use, and even murder.

The purpose of the government is to pass fair laws and fairly enforcement them. Amnesty of any kind is not a fair law and the immigration laws will not be fairly enforced.

Those laws are already on the books. That's what Reagan did. Does anyone out there know what the immigration laws are, or do you all assume that they mean whatever you want them to mean. You can make all the laws you want to; but ,if you are not willing to enforce them they will mean nothing just like the current immigration laws mean nothing because the chief law enforcement officer in the USA (G.W. Bush) refuses to enforce the laws he has sworn to faithfully uphold.. I knew an illegal alien that lived here since 1956. He never bothered becoming a citizen because it just seemed pointless if nobody cared about the law, and I say good for him...

Something like only 2% of illegals work. Although they represent roughly 3% of our population, they are 35% of the prison population. That would not be possible unless something like 50% of illegals engage in crime serious enough to be sent to prison for. Note, that you don't typically go to prison without a long history of violent crimes. Even the most strict states only have a 3 strikes your out law. Which means the criminal gets a slap on the wrist for two violent crimes (only violent crimes count as strikes) before doing significant jail time. This says ALOT about who comes over the border as an illegal. The number is quite high (roughly 1 million a year).

The amnesty bill is a red herring. We already have in place enough programs that 100% of the illegals who wanted it could gain status as first, legals and then citizens in a rather short period of time. The amnesty bill is not necessary for its stated purpose. But that's not its REAL purpose. It's real purpose is to be altered at a later date so that every one of the illegals regardless of what they do, can gain status as citizens. This is a step towards creating a new slave/criminal class that votes communist/fascist politics.

I think it is going to be near impossible to be able to send even a fraction of the illegal immigrants back, but I think they should be deported. Illegal immigration is--guess what?--illegal! I don't care what you think about the situation, you can't deny that. But I can agree with a law that lets you work at becoming a legal citizen.

rewarding a child for doing wrong only encourages it to continue to behave badly. Once more, it also encourages its siblings to do the same.
I do not believe that anyone who is in this country illegally should be rewarded. Nor do I think they should get a slap on the hand, sat in the corner, or given a time out. Gather up their belongings and get them back home ASAP! Sorry.
I am of course referring to All illegals here.
Maybe those that came here legally deserve some consideration, but not the illegals.
Time this country enforced its laws, time it got a backbone with others, besides its own people.

illegals would gain the right to vote.
NO No a Thousand times No.

Yes. Build the fence no matter the cost. Hire enough Officers with Dogs to Patrol the fence. One Officer and Dog every 100 feet.

Send them back. If you were waiting in line for a really cool amusement ride for three hours and than found out dozens of people cut in front of you and now they get to stay on the ride forever, wouldn't you not be mad? I get mad when anyone cuts in front of me. A law is a law.
Besides, say we did to that. What about the millions more that want in our country. Ten to one they will have family here, they will want to come in too. When the heck is it ever going to stop, thats why we need to build that wall, its crucial for our safety and economy.
