People should serve out of love. To love should bring a sense of peace and freedom. If someone returns your love, what greater gift could there be? The ideal would be to serve and be served for eternity. That is what Christ wanted.

I would rather be free for one day than serve for eternity if I hated the job I would do for eternity, or would eventually come to hate it.

Hmmm... always had a lot of time for Satan in "Paradise Lost" when he answered this question with "non serviam!" ("I will not serve")

Is the origin of this question Satan's declaration of "Better to be free for a day in Hell than serve for eternity in Heaven!"

Mussolini said something similar, as I recall: "better to live a single day as a lion than a thousand years as a sheep!" (Italy in 1945 might not have agreed, mind you)

The question is really who are you presently serving, and what are your results so far? Today's culture offers pleasure, comfort and money. These do not lead to freedom, but ultimately bring pain and suffering to people, their family and friends. True freedom comes though serving God..
