Which would you rather have as a life-long friend?

A smart person would be both. There is nothing to be gained out of being selfish, uncaring and hateful. However, if I had to choose one out of the two characteristics to have in a friend, I would choose the good over the smart a million times. The good person makes the good friend.

What do you mean by "better"?

A smart person often has the burden of making difficult choices that don't always have a good outcome. However, inteligence is often accompanied by wealth and power. These things don't always bring happiness. Then again, if I have to choose between being poor and miserable or being rich and miserable. I would rather be rich and miserable. At least that way I could use my inteligence to find purpose in life and have the means to obtain it.

A good person doesn't need much to be happy. A cause or an ideal is all they need. The problem here is that the cause that they are fighting for is often against an injustice. So there might not be a reward. They are often lift carring the burden that may never be removed. More often then not, they die before they see the fruition of their efforts. Hence the adage, nice guys finish last.

Sorry, I didn't see the friend part. I choose a good person as a friend. You can trust a good person, I can't always say that about a smart person.

A good person is best in my opinion. The decisions and choices a good person makes are for all of the right reasons. What they say is from the heart. Intelligent people (many, not all) are usually kind of inadequate when it comes to their personal life. Their mind is too busy on other fronts.

I would hope that I am smart enough to be a good person, and I would choose as a friend someone who thinks the same way.

A smart person is a good person, they would be stupid if they were bad. That is how it works, have you ever hear of a person who was so smart they were stupid? I have seen them, and do not want to be around them.

Good, because a stupid good person is much better to have around than a smart evil one.
