If you could transform the United States into the country you think it should be, how would Christmas be celebrated? What part should the government play? How would you have it celebrated in schools? What would you like shopping malls to do? Would you erect nativity scenes on public property? If so, would you also erect something to honor the Jewish holiday of Hanukkah? Would you allow Humanists to erect a display to celebrate HumanLight?
I just want to understand what you really want--what you think is fair.

As I'm a Humanist, I'm for freedom of religion. My question wasn't hostile--I just want to understand what Christians really think, how they think Christmas should be honored as opposed to the way it is now.

Government has no business telling anyone what they can or can't do with regard to their celebration customs. Just leave people alone and stop being so thin skinned about everything. I'm so tired of hearing how this person or that person is offended by the silliest of things. If people are more tolerant of each other it might actually snowball and we could all be a lot happier.

As Christmas is a Christian holiday I believe the government should offer the day off as a paid holiday for Christians. That is the extent of any government involvement. I believe in the separation of Church and State.
I would do away with Christmas trees - save a tree for Jesus.
I would replace the tree tradition with a nativity scene in people's homes, if they so chose. For presents, I would offer those I give gifts to a small package that contains the three gifts the three wise men brought to the baby Jesus.
Being a good Catholic, I would attend Mass. Other can worship or not worship according to their conscience.
Merry Christmas!

Christmas is the celebration of the Birth of Christ, not anything else. Yes it may be timed to coincide with some ancient pagan holiday, and yes money hungry merchants capitalize off it-but that is not why we celebrate it. We do it because of Christ. Every other idea, religion, holiday or what ever should stay out of it. If you don't want to participate, you don't have to. But don't try to ruin it for those who do. If you can not find something you want to celebrate, then just stay home.

Christmas should be a tradition to celebrate Happiness. It should not be connected to any religious afiliation. But since it is difficult not to connect Christmas with Christianity the best way to celebrate Christmas is through arrangements and adornaments of Christmas tree to celebrate most important religions in the world.

I would like to have all stores closed on christmas day, no exceptions at all and people stay at home with their family. We never have time to be a family and that day is the special one for all. yes I believe that all religions should be expressed and that goes for nativity scenes to be put up anywhere people want them. Everyone has their own believe but our country was founded on religion and we should stay with it. No I don't believe the jewish people should have their own holiday as simple as we'd have to have religion day for all the others who have come over to the USA. therefore they should follow our believes just like anyone who had relatives come over from another country.

Mention the word religion and people freak out...Lock their doors, pull down shutters and start praying they had more beer to last them the weekend in case there was some attack. I mean if people stuck to the teachings of religion ( any religion) we would not ba asking these questions. People started to become to clever and asking too many unanswerable questions, overturned stoned which were best left unturned. . Christmas has become commercial and no longer religious and if anything does not bring in money ..they think screw it.!!! christmas is just a excuse for people to get drunk, buy sexy underwears and have loads of sex and pretend they like everybody. But Chreist himself. There maybe freedom of speech ... BUt there is no freedom of religion thanks to Big fat cat capitalists. and politicians around the world.

Since Jesus was born in September 4 BC, I have no trouble with the materialistic celebration of Christmas. I just wish that Thanksgiving was not surrounded by Christian ads.

We do a pretty good job of it, except for the commercialization. The shopping rush is a bit crazy. I'd be perfectly happy to buy my kids a little something and get nothing at all for myself. A good meal, a day off work, a warm fireplace, traditional symbols - lights/trees/manger scenes, etc... good times.

nicely it particularly is like this. i think of the american Christians have lost a great form of ability and effect over the years, by way of fact they naively thought that freedom of speech grew to become right into a solid component, and it grew to become into. yet now that issues are not run the Christian methods, with the Christians extreme known of morals, now the international places beginning as much as rather suck. I say supply them returned their regulations, it by no ability affected me having the ten commandments displayed in front of the court docket homestead. as long as i understand the guidelines of the interest i will play it, now it particularly is anyones wager of what the guidelines are.

Well, since most of our holidays are actually bases on a Pagan calendar with a "Christian " renaming... I would say keep it as it is.
Parents would have to give schools a paper saying the child's faith and holidays. The faith would have to be registered, of course. and would have to allow to the State's standards of education and attendance.
