i was recently told by my doctor that an ultrasound indicated that my baby has a "sandal gap foot abnormality". i've been scheduled for a 3-d ultrasound to check for more abnormalities and possibly amnio. i have a 3 week wait for this appointment and all i've read suggests that my baby most likely has down's syndrome as it is one of the most common symtoms in children with down's syndrome. i was wondering if anyone has a baby with sandal gap that does not have down's syndrome or is otherwise completely normal.

Sandal gap deformity involves medial displacement of the great toe, giving rise to a greater than normal space between the first and second toes. Separation of the great toe has been reported in 45% of children with Down syndrome, but is not a typical finding in other syndromes. The deformity may, however, be a normal variant, occurring in many normal fetuses or neonates. If the findings of prenatal sonographic examination suggest sandal gap deformity, a careful search for other risk factors for Down syndrome is recommended. An awareness and understanding of any such abnormalities, even subtle ones, should -especially with regard to karyotyping- increase a practitioner's confidence during parental counseling. If no other abnormality is present, including clinical risk factors, separation of the great toe can be accepted as a normal variant.

Let us take it with an example: You are offered a job, you accept. The employer will make or save money by your services and if you honestly deliver the employer will be able to deliver the promised bit, in case you are not able to then either you have lied on your CV or you are not doing your best -for considering this example, all other variables are kept at a constant. Now to super impose the same on nature. God does not do anything bad for us neither does he plan any calamaty. God gives us an opportunity and we become greedy and ruin the honest flow of income/reward. Where am trying to get here is the fact that God does not test us more than what we can take, at the same time, we have to re-evaluate our own self, what is it that we have done to deserve such a deed. The situation lets say like Helen Keller, today she is a role model for all of us. Normal or abnormal. Sometimes it is a hard reminder for all of us to thank the Almighty for what we so easily take for granted.
