We don't worship him. We do not pray to him.
We love him for the sacrifices he made to bring about the church, think about it: He was REPEATEDLY beaten, falsely jailed, tarred and feathered, called awful names, literally hated and eventually murdered because he testified he saw Jesus Christ and God the Father and they told him to start their church. We love him and admire him and KNOW he was the Lord's annointed to usher in the last dispensation. There is also a song dedicated to him called "Praise to the Man".
A Huge part of being a Mormon is having a testimony of Joseph Smith and knowing what he did he really did. If we didn't support him, there would be no reason to be a member, for the Lord restored the true and complete gospel to the earth through Joseph. Joseph was the Lord's tool. Yes we praise him, we love him. We do not worship him as a god or as our God.
Joseph Smith has done more for the salvation of man, save Jesus Christ only, than any other man whom ever lived on the earth. I stand as a firm witness that that is true!

You have two words confused: praise and worship.
1. Praise: an expression of approval and commendation
2. Worship: reverence offered a divine being

As an example to demonstrate how different these two words are, I can say that I praise my four-year-old son for many of his achievements, but I do not worship him in the least.

Likewise, Mormons praise Joseph Smith for his achievements, but they do not worship him. Worshiping anything or anyone other than God is considered idolatry.

There's a big difference between praise and worship. We don't worship Joseph Smith, but we recognize that he was a great man, along with all the other past prophets, both ancient and latter-day. We worship God the Father and His Son, Jesus Christ.

I strongly doubt every mormon tells you we don't praise Joseph Smith. In fact, I bet every mormon would tell you we do praise Joseph Smith. You're getting your words confused. We do not worship Joseph Smith. That's probably what you heard from "every" mormon.

It's a hymn saying Praise to the Man Who Communed with Jehovah . . . there is a difference between honoring someone and worshipping someone. In this case, you could substitute the word honor for praise and the hymn would still be intact.

Only through Christ can we be saved. It is Christ we worship.

Do you praise Moses?

Joseph Smith. Brigham Young, ..., down to the head of the church are prophets. The prophet strength is God's.

When we say we don't "praise" him we mean we don't worship him as our god or anything. We just love him and honor him for all the things he sacrificed to make sure that latter day saints would have the true gospel today.
