I.D. cards are irrelevant. Successful deterrents will lower crimes rates. We have to stop this "You naughty naughty felon, don't do that again" attitude to criminals

No it will be a massively expensive failure. The technology does not work. They are an ID thief's wettest dream.
Read the linked article, it clearly demonstrates that the technology does not work as the same technology is already being used in the new biometric passports with the remote-readable RFID chip in them and they have been cracked already.
They can easily be cloned by criminal gangs and who are the police going to believe when YOUR "secure" passport is used in a crime?
ID fraud will increase. Criminals would use the new cards to get a whole new 'clean' ID and get away with years of crime!
Crime will increase, our privacy and our ID's will be compromised even further. ID cards should be scrapped!
Every independent observer who has investigated this hopeless scheme, whether in the IT industry, Politics, human rights, crime investigators, lawy, academia or wherever, they have all come out against it. The ONLY organisations in favour are those who have already, or will in the future stand to benefit financially from it.
There has not been a single argument FOR the compulsary ID card that has stood up to scrutiny.
The argument I hear a LOT is, if you have nothing to hide, then you have nothing to fear, OK for that argument consider the following: If you have nothing to hide, fine YOU have one! I have nothing to hide, but I do not want criminal gangs remote hacking my card and cloning it either!
If you truly have NOTHING to hide, then email me all your credit card numbers, bank account details medical records etc.
What? not prepared to do that eh? then perhaps you DO have something to hide! and that would be NORMAL HEALTHY PRIVACY!!!
What about the Government's procurment for this system? They are not being open about that, it's MY money (and every other tax payer's) that they are using to set up this immoral and probably illegal scheme, WHY won't they come clean? something to hide perhaps? more Lordships bought and paid for?
Criminals, Illegal immigrants and terrorists are LOVING the idea of a compulsary ID card and cannot wait for it to be implemented.

So far nobody has made it to the real point. Compulsory ID cards, as the UK Government wants, are an invasion of privacy. You seem to accept the CCTV invasion, so why not ID cards? The Government already knows more about you and me than they are entitled to. I doubt they would cut crime by any. I agree with the previous answerer that ID fraud would go up.

They could make ID Cards compulsory but what would be the point. There is always a way of getting round these types of things, and it always proves costly to good people. Crime reduction - people would still the ID Cards so increasing crime

I believe ID cards will add to crime...fraud. Having all your details on one card, protected or not, it doesn't matter. Criminals always find a way around. Also they will be working in the departments handling the databases and manufacture of the cards. If the government suggests that they will be screened before being employed...please...they're wasting everyones time. Great idea in theory.

i think it would be a good thing but the government should be responsible for the costs not everybody has a provisional or passport. my brother is struggling to open a bank account because he doesnt drive and hes not got a passport. it then provides you with id for everything without costing a penny. It has 2 b fool proof tho 2 stop fraud

I don't' know about any difference in crime, but yes I.D. cards are a good idea, maybe to minimize the illegals. although the people in custody right now for terror threats in Britain are home grown,so go figure.

I would like ID cards to be made compulsory. They would need to make them really safe and secure. How about imprinted with your own fingerprints.
