You dont have to wait til summer time but you should wait until you get back from vacation. If you are wanting a puppy I would recommend waiting till the snow breaks because housetraining a pup in the winter is very difficult.Where ever you send them to go potty is where they will always go and in the snow they seem to want to be very close to the door .As for school pets can handle some alone time as long as you have a place to keep them for that long period just make up the play time with them when you are home.A dogs love is very rewarding.
Good luck on your decsion.

I would suggest getting an older dog that has already had training. It will be so much easier if you are not home all day. Wait until you get back from vacation and then talk to your parents again. Make sure they meet any dog you are considering first--if you all have to live in the same house, then it's important that everyone gets along (dog and people) and is happy with the choice.

A dog is like adopting a baby....you must take the out ...sometimes 5:00 AM and at noon, and at 5pm and right before bed. You must provide feed and water....then take them right out. Then, someone must clean up the yard....from the doo doo.

You have to train a dog....every day!

Why not just donate your time at the local SPCA? Then you will get the idea how to take care of a dog....and you will see the responsibility...and you'll prove to your parents that you are a responsible young adult.

no but wait till after vacation when there is someone home during the day. You can't train a new dog if no one is home to do so and it isn't fair to the dog also.
