My sister breeds Golden Retrievers, and I can vouch that they are the perfect family pet. They are not rough, and they are very protective of all members of the household, but do tend to bond with one in particular. They are very easily trained and can be taught their boundaries at a young age. they should NEVER be shouted at as they are very sensitive.

My best friend owns a Labrador, and I have to say they are affectionate, but a little bit silly and exuberant. They have boundless energy and they can be a bit rough, and tend to jump around and chew a lot of things. A retriever is a much calmer dog.

Both labs and goldens can be great family dogs IF you do your homework and carefully choose a good breeder. As soon as it is old enough enroll the puppy in a good class (NOT the Petsmart type classes) and make sure everyone in the family understands his or her role in maintaining the dog.
Both are large breeds with a lot of energy. Of course with the golden there is also all that coat - gets pretty dirty and needs a lot of grooming. With proper supervision and training older kids can be great at this.
Both breeds tend to be puppies until 2 -3 years. This can be frustrating and amusing. But it is also part of their attraction I think. Neither is known to be a particularly stubborn adult - and they are not all that difficult to train.
Have fun!

Golden retrievers are very obedient and quite easy to train; that's one reason why they are a preferred breed as giude dogs. The ones that have been bred from the show bench dogs are the "dumb blondes" compared to those from a hunting line. However, some may become attached to one special person whom they'll obey.

They are good with children but they are also large dogs 50-70 lbs. if on breed spec. but often larger-- there are 100 lb. "goldens" out there. As with any dog, don't stare them in the eyes. If you want to rough house with them, OK, but don't blame the dog if something gets busted.

As guard dogs, some goldens are as likely to wag their tails at a burgalr as bark. Goldens aren't very territorial.

The only real downside to goldens is you have to brush them a lot and you need to give them a lot of exercise.

Hi, I understand that you are looking for some advice or resources to help fully train your dog or fix behavior problems. If a professional dog trainer is not an option at this time, or if you want to trt training your dog on your own (a great way to bond), I'd suggest you https://bitly.im/aMQVN

A friend recommened it to me a few years ago, and I was amazed how quickly it worked, which is why I recommend it to others. The dog training academy also has as an excellent home training course.

Goldens are, in general, the most friendly and obedient dogs in the universe! They are well-known family dogs and very loyal to everyone in the home.
However, as with all dogs, temperament needs to be trained as well... so you'll have to invest some time into obedience training to get the best out of a golden.

goldens and labs are VERY similar in temperment. They are both retreivers. (although mine don't retrieve).

You HAVE to puppy proof your house and when they are young...before 2...they are hard on small children..they knock them over. Thet HAVE to have training to focus their energy...their brains are quick and so are they...they need an outlet (ie Excercise). Overall, if you do right by them, you will be rewarded with an excellent relationship and a loyal friend. Do not get a dog to "protect" your child...that's your job...not a dog's.

Oh and best advice..get a GREAT vaccuum..both labs and goldens shed like crazy!!! Fur everywhere!!!

My BIL has one and it's a very lovable dog. Great with kids, etc. I know that his and the breed tend to be on the hyper side.
I would prefer a lab--we had a couple when I was growing up. Very smart, easy to train, good watchdogs and very loyal.

golden retrievers are one of the best lovable, but big dogs i have ever met. they protect children, and play with them too. but, it really depends on if they r easy to train or whether they r the right dog for u.
