sickle cell is a 'recessive' trait that might not express itself for several generations, if it wasn't, virtually all black people would have this disease. dad sounds like maybe he wasn't paying attention in science class? or maybe he's just a jerk.

if he forces the issue, and really wants a dna/paternity test done, the logical thing to do is go along with it, and when it shows he IS the father, sue him for every last penny he has (plus sue any of his family members who were insensitive enough to express doubt in front of mom for 'mental abuse' or something)

A sickle cell trait is not totally connected to a black person. Mediterranean people also can have sickle cell traits. These can be passed on the children who may never develop the disease itself. Please have the Dad research Sickle Cell Anemia to find out this is not isolated to black people only. Log on Web MD for more extensive information.

the family history is not completely known, get the parents both tested. just because someone looks white doesn't mean there are not people of color in their ancestry
