Yorkies, Pomeranians, Papillions (great pets! Seldom yap), and Chinese Crested are pretty small. Poodles make great pets.
The ultimate small dog is a Tibetan Spaniel. No yapping, smart, sweet, loving dogs. My auntie has 2 and I always threaten to steal them. Look here: www.tibbies.net to see the cutie pies.
Get a shelter mutt. They make the best pets. Many shelters specialize in small dogs. Talk to the attendants, they have spent lots of time with the dogs and can show you the perfect pet for your family.
Shelter dogs are inexpensive, temperment tested, and come with lots of "extras" for one low price. You are also saving a life, can't beat that.
Cheers.

Chichauha's are cute dogs! but they will have to wear a jacket when they go outside in the cold. They are delicate dogs.
Jack Russell Terriers are short haired dogs, with lots and lots of energy. thats the kind of dog I wanted but they are expensive so I didnt get one.
Shih tzu's are rather ugly because they have a pushed in nose. but if you get a cross with like a poodle or cockerspaniel. They are long haired dogs but they dont shed and you can get them shaved. They can be really cute. That is what I have a Shih tzu, poodle and cockerspaniel cross. and they love the snow! If you get any snow where you live....

I have to say that a dog is a big responsibility and that they live about 10-15 years! having said that i would recommend a Pekingese, i have one and they are the most adorable, independent dogs! They're also great watch dogs, mind lets me know when someone is near my door!
and no they don;t just bark at anything like chihuahua!!!!
they grow to be 8-10 lbs!

Papillons. Yorkies, Maltese, Pomeranians, Pekes, Chihuahuas... Dachshunds, Mini Poodles. That's all I can think of right now, and any of those breeds COULD grow to be bigger than 10 lbs. Someone brought in a 16 lb. Chihuahua.

You should get a pomeranian/poodle (or pomapoo). They are so much cuter than chiwawas and they don't shed. They grow to be about 6 pounds. We were looking for the same type of thing that you were and we finally found out about this kind of dog and we got one and named him Cooca. He is so cute and we are so glad we got this kind of dog.

Chihuahuas are adorable little things, but they can be a bit high-strung.
Take a look at the local animal shelter before you actually buy a dog, unless you really have your heart set on that chihuahua.
Good luck!

if you looking for a small dog, you need to think about whether you want one that needs a lot of grooming like a lhasa apso, or a yorkshire terrier or a pomeranian, unlike the chiuhua which doesnt need much grooming if it has short hair or long haired which i have, and is easy to manage, good luck looking

Get a pound puppy! You can get itty bitty ones from the SPCA, those poor guys get abandoned too. My rescue pup is the best dog I have ever owned (a Heinz 57 variety). She is healthy, smarter and more loyal than any purebred I have ever owned.

I'm sure that there are dog breeds listed on the Internet, along with facts about each, and with pictures.
I typed dog breeds on the browser and sure enough, several choice sites you and your mom will enjoy checking out.(^_^)
