My 20 month old son's poop has been very green for the past few days. He's healthy and eats very well - I'm worried he may be having too much milk. Any ideas out there? Is this normal?

It is normal according to this Pediatrician's Perspective

The green pigment is produced in the liver, stored in the gallbladder, and secreted into the intestines in the course of normal digestion. Most of the green pigment is reabsorbed, unless the poop travels fast through the gastrointestinal tract. The faster the poop moves, the greener it will be. It's more typical in breast-fed babies where transit times are shorter.

I like green poop. It's a sign of health. I prefer it much more than the alternative.

As the PP's have stated, sudden green poop is usually from the food they eat. If it's neon green poop, I would say blue food coloring would do it. The blue mixes with bile and other acids and turns poop neon green. Purple Kool-aid and blue rasberry icee popsicles both have lots of blue food coloring/dyes.

If it's more of a regular green, then it could be green veggies or any food that is high in iron.

Too much milk usually turns my son's poop more of a yellow color. Try to think of everything he eats in a day. Perhaps you can write it all down and see if you can find the source.

Hope that helps!

Honey, i work in a daycare and have seen every color poop in the known universe, from normal brown to BRIGHT BLUE , and the bright blue stained his bottom (found out later that THAT kid had a blue cupcake for breakfast). Green is no big deal. I see green a LOT. As well as yellow. I wouldn't worry about it too much. It probably has something to do with what he's eating and not something that's wrong with him.. Just don't give him any blue cupcakes...

Just to be on the safe side, while at the doctor, I was changing my baby...he had a greenish poop and she asked if his poop always looked that way because green poop is a symptom of RSV...

My older ones have crayola green poop after eating Kroger brand Froot Loops :) I have taken a picture of it, it has been so green & I didn't think anyone would believe me!! :)

Right now my 15 mth old son has very green poop and he has a runny nose to. I think he might just have a cold or maybe teething again. It could also be from something hes eating. I think its normal as long as its not to hard or runny

Very green would indicate to me, another Mom, that he has been eating food high in iron--red meat, broccoli, spinach, etc., as opposed to milk. I've not known milk to do that. I would say to give it a few days and see--it should change back to normal if he is not eating high iron food. If he isn't, or it doesn't change, obviously take him to the Dr. He may not be processing iron properly and that can be dangerous.

Drinking too much milk is not the problem, my son drinks a gallon every two days! Just recently my son's pediatrician told me to have him drink no more than 24 oz. per day. He said that too much milk can make him not be able to absorb some nutrients. I don't know which and I don't know why but I am following his advise.

Is he eating anything blue? Blue things make your poop green (and by blue I mean like candy or koolaid not blueberries)

Some green foods like spinach might make his poop green too.

From what I know green and brown poo are ok. the only thing you should be worried about is if it's diarhea or if it's too hard (we call that rocks), and especially if there is any blood in it at all.

As long as nothing else seems to be wrong and he is eating well, then I wouldn't be concerned at all. If you continue to be, you can call his pediatricians office and speak to an advice nurse.

Feces, unlike snot is not bad because it is green.

Most likely it's just something like blueberries or food coloring in his diet. As long as he is GOING poo and he's not having problems with it.. you're good to go. There is rarely an issue with too much milk unless he is constipated.
