Dry wood is obvious, but for particular woods look at pine. the lighter the wood, the faster it will burn, the more dense the rings, the longer it will burn. so if you have 2 branches of equal size radius, and one had 20 rings, and the other 40. the 20 ringed one would burn faster as it is not so compressed. the faster growing trees tend to be less dense, hence pine is typical of quick burners.

In my area of the U.S., Eucalyptus is the fastest and hottest burning. It is not good for fireplace or bb-q but when a eucalyptus forest or grove catches fire, it is extremely difficult to contain or extinquish.

Very dry pitch pine. It has a lot of very flammable sap in it.
