All of the above. But make sure the computer will support XP Pro with enough RAM, CPU, HDD, etc. Forget what Microsoft says for minimum specs. In the real world, in order to get the most out of XP, you'll want no less than 256MB RAM at least 800MHz CPU, and no less than 30GB hard drive. My own experiences suggest at a minimum 512MB RAM, 1GHz CPU and 40GB hard drive. I'd also suggest visiting this website for some decent instructions and actual screen shots:

I would recomend, when it ask you to upgrade or clean install do Clean install so your computer can have 2 operating system. That way if your Wife wants to use Windows 98 she can and if you want to use XP you can. Just make sure you each restart the computer so you can select the OS you want.

If your current version of Windows is eligible for upgrade to Windows XP, you can use Upgrade Advisor to make sure your hardware and software are compatible with Windows XP. My Pentium III would not allow it.

if its an upgrade disc otherwise do a clean instal you should do a clean instal anyway (or i dont know ask the wife)
