It depends on the level of your friend's depression, but whatever that may be, my 1st suggestion is to pray for her, regardless of your religion or lack thereof.

If it has been going on for a very long time, and she spends all of her time alone with no people around and doesn't do anything with her life, you must convince her to go get professional help ASAP.

If this person is still performing necessary activities like washing up, eating, drinking, sleeping, and even working or at school, then I suggest convincing her to do any activity that gets her to stop thinking about herself, which is the main problem for some depressed people.

These activities include but are not limited to: daily exercise, stretching, yoga, or pilates, volunteering at a local church or charity with any spare time, keeping a daily journal, and talking with friends online or on the phone.

God bless you and your friend.

Take her to church with you to learn God's truth.

In the Beginning God created heavens and earth.
God gives you air to breathe and sunshine to enjoy.
God gives you water to drink and food to eat.
God gives you a wonderful body and sound mind, to live.
God loves you, and you are precious to Him.
Son of God died on the Cross to save us from condemnation.
Jesus’ love is boundless and everlasting.
We have the hope of Heaven through Jesus.
Life therefore has fantastic and glorious future!
(Digestion of above can even prevent depression and suicidal thoughts.)

The best thing that you can do is be as supportive as you can. That is the number one thing. Dont ever blame her for being depressed or tell her to snap out of it, thats the worst thing you can do to someone who is depressed.

As long as she's not a danger to herself then all you can do is be supportive and care about her. Just listen and sometimes just being there is enugh. But if she gets too bad you need to get her professional help either by getting her family or someone else involved.
