I don't think I've ever really heard of "adult onset", but maybe they become aware of the problem in adulthood? An example of co-consciousness that you may find helpful is "First Person Plural" by Cameron West. Once aware of what was going on, he shared awareness with his alters. For examples of core personalities who didn't share awareness, you have "Sybil" and "When Rabbit Howls". I highly recommend "Rabbit", as it was written with the assistance of Trudi Chase's alters.
I, personally, do not have DID (it's no longer classified as MPD according to the APA). But I've worked with individuals diagnosed with it. I don't really doubt its existence. And I don't think I've met many who do, to be honest.

There is debate among mental health professionals whether MPD even exists or is a valid diagnosis.
Personally, I think it is possible in the case of extreme childhood trauma. In adults - if they suppressed the memory of childhood trauma and it was brought out in therapy, it is possible they could revert to a previous state of MPD which existed at the time of the original trauma. IMNSHO.
As far as how the personalities interact, you would have to ask someone who is a multiple. And Bobbi and Sandy say I can't tell you about that. ;) j/k

DID/MPD can occur at any time before or after therapy. At any age and and gender. It takes about 7 years from entering therapy that DID/MPD is diagnosed. Only a therapist or psychiatrist is qualified to diagnosis this. This disorder is a result from extreme long lasting trauma.
Yes and no that they may be aware.................. some ppl loose their whole lives they worked for and then seek treatment after it's all gone....... It's sad.

a fracture, my friend suffered some bad childhood stuff, abuse of all types, total disfunctional upbringing, he became a drug addict, then almost killed himself because of it, he told me he used to here voices from an early age, & the drugs stopped this, (opiates). because of getting help for his illness, he went to a retreate, & worked a 12 step program, because he was expected to look at his life, childhood etc, & the fact he was expected to open up to strangers, He had all this emotional stuff sitting in his conscience & sub-conscience, but he was to scared to let it all out, also because he had buried it for so long, he didn't know what was wrong with him; he became more traumatised, went into denial, depression, & then mpd set in, he says he has bouts or periods that seem to be where he is not in his body, & talking to some one else in his head, he switches character with different people who he meets... A crying shame. he doesn't know where to get the help to stop this.
