Rather than try to tell you about a rifle you didn't ask about, I'll tell you about the one you did ask about. I have 2 Bushmasters, the M17S (Bullpup) and the Patrolmans carbine M4A3, I've shot many of the varminters as well. You've made a good decision to get a Bushmaster, their rifles are unsurpassed and their customer service is outstanding. The varminters I've shot will give consistant -1 moa groups at 200 yards with a good scope. I've shot high end .223(Wilson combat) and low end .223 ( saiga) The bushmaster will outperform the saiga and will keep up with and often beat the wilson combat rifles. The varminter is of course an accurised weapon giving you, the shooter, the benefit of years of research done by Bushmaster.I highly recommend the Harris bipod if you plan on doing long distance target shooting. The varminter is by no means a combat rifle, it's intended purpose is highly accurate target shooting and of course, taking care of pesky varmints from a distance.Unlike the lower end .223's intended for combat accuracy, great care is given to each varminter to ensure accuracy and dependability.

The .223 Bushmaster is simply a semi-auto, no different than a ruger mini-14, a number of different 30-06's, or .22s. The .223 is a varmint rd, and has been used for decades for that purpose. It's technically a .22 caliber bullet, it doesn't have NEAR the power of even a 30-30 lever action. LOL, rapid fire? really? You think it cycles any faster than most other semi-autos? It's semi-auto, that means pull the trigger it shoots 1 bullet. You have to pull the trigger each time to make it go bang. It's not full auto, it's not select fire, it's a standard run of the mill semi-auto rifle, that shoots a high velocity .22 caliber bullet. People act as if it's some full auto military weapon, it's NOT. Assault weapons, by definition are select fire meaning burst or full auto features. The MSM and gun grabbers have managed to convince people that COSMETICS make it a assault weapon, it does NOT. I can put a collapsible stock, on 30-30 lever gun, a collapsible stock with a pistol grip on a pump action shot gun and it's still a pump action shot gun. However under the AW ban those are suddenly assault weapons. Sorry folks, that's not the case, AR's are NOT military weapons, are NOT full auto, they don't have a select fire switch, they cosmetically LOOK like one, that is all, nothing more. Oh, and I've got 25 rd mags for my .22 lr, 30 rd mags for my 9mm pistol, and 30 rd mags for a few other guns as well. When I shoot, I prefer to shoot, not spend half my time loading a 5 or 10 rd mag. So I take out several preloaded "scary" 30 rd mags. So does the wife! Shooting is a great sport, tactical shooting competitions are a blast as are 1911 .45 acp competitions. Our country was founded with and around guns, and we'd not have it without them. The platform (AR-15) is the best selling rifle in the Untied States for good reason. You can pull the BCG (bolt carrier group) and swap it out in seconds to shoot .22 lr. You can swap the complete upper in seconds and go from the .223 to anything from a .22 LR, 6.5 grendel, 6.8 rem spc, 7.62x39, .300 blackout, .458 socom, .50 beuwolf which all use the same mag as the .223 (makes it very cost effective) even 9mm or 45 acp. This means you can hunt virtually any animal in North America with it. It's also one of the safest home defense weapons, because of the tiny caliber and high velocity it breaks-up quickly and doesn't penetrate objects well. So it's safer for people on the other side of a wall and especially neighbors who live close by, It's one of the reasons police have gone to them. It's also a very light weapon, and with the collapsible stock adjusts to fit a wide array of shooters, and women love that it's light, adjusts to fit them and has next to no recoil. As someone else said, the 2nd has got jack squat to do with hunting. Read it, read the PA and VA state Constitutions it's derived from, and the Federalist papers, along with letters between Monroe, Washington, Madison and Jefferson among others. and maybe you'll get a new appreciation for the 2nd, why it's there and why it is crucial to protect it. It's very clear the intent.

If you are looking for a reliable .223 then take a look at the SAIGA. A Saiga will shot 1000s of rounds without being cleaned and without any problems. Now if you are just wanting to look at the rifle and be able to tell your buds "Hay look what I have this makes me better then you." then does it matter if it is all that reliable?

I have 4 Saigas and have shot over 10000 without a problem with any of them.
