My dogs shed big time and up until now we've been buying the stuff from Pet Smart (not sure what it's called as I haven't bought it in a while) that you mix with your dogs/cats food. It's oil based. It really controlled the shedding but it's SO EXPENSIVE. $26/bottle that lasts like a week. A friend told me to add olive oil to their food. I wanted to get some more opinions and see what has worked for others. Thanks alot!

Olive oil is better than anything you can buy from a pet store. raw eggs are good too. In fact I mix two raw eggs and a 1/4 cup of olive oil with a small amount of dog food every morning and give to my dog.

The best remedy for your dog's healthy coat to have minimal shedding and optimal quality is good nutrition. We often underestimate the value of a balanced and nutritional diet for our 'best friends'. Dog's systems, for example, do not digest grain products well or easily. This leads to a host of problems from gas to aggression.
My suggestion is to check the nutrition values of what you are feeding your dog. In the long run this will help better than any shampoo or product.
A natural diet, specific to a canine majors on meat, bone, organs, etc. They are carnivores! If your dog food lists grain or grain products as the first or second ingredient, then you will know why shedding (among other things) has become a problem.
Adding a bit (one tbsp per meal) of olive or fish oil to your dog's diet may help the sheen but will not solve the problem.

What kind of food are you feeding it? Sometimes just switching to a higher quality food will help with the shedding.

Also, daily brushing with a brush suited for your dogs coat will help quite a bit.

I've heard that adding Brewers Yeast to your dogs food in beneficial to the skin and coat. It can also help decrease shedding. But you must also brush your dogs fur to help it come out faster. A good groomer can also help with removing the dead coat.

Here's what we used to do to keep my German Shepherd's coat full and shiny.

1-2 Cans of Sardines (oil and all) a week!!!

* Mixed in with his/her dog food. This works GREAT,
but be kind and get good Sardines, not the cheap stuff.

My vet recommended this to us 20 years ago, have lived by it ever since. Best of luck!

Don't be fooled by the term "all natural" on any label.
Table salt is all natural, but I wouldn't eat too much of it.
