Good question, I calculate that one could walk completely around the earth more than once in 40 years.

He didn't "wander". He was living in the wilderness for 40 years. He married, had 2 children and became a shepherd. God also waited for the "appointed time" when he would use Moses to have His people leave Egypt.

Oh, if you're referring to when after the Israelites left Egypt...Moses was told to be leader over the people since they had disobeyed God and said "a day for a year" and they were to stay in the wilderness as a punishment for not trusting God.

Moses `went on the run` after committing murder in Egypt, he discovered a new God, returned to Egypt, left with a mixed bag of Asiatics, and slaughtered and pillaged his way to the promised land. The forty year journey with a 600,000 following is pure exaggeration, and not mentioned in Egyptian records. Moses army headed towards the promised land - sadly it was already occupied. Moses gained the land God had promised by war, slaughter, and large scale killing. That much is true, the forty years however is false.

GOD Limited their Years (only to them) in the Desert because they (almost all of them) would Not Believe GOD and Take the Land.
They got Scared by the Spies Reports.
Joshua and Caleb didn't, but they were Stuck with the Majority to Wander too.
UNTILL---Da Da Daaaa!
The Unbelievers Died Off and the Youngns' Grew up and Believed GOD and Took the Land, along with Joshua and Caleb.
You see, you can get Stuck in Wrong Ways of Thinking (mabe religious thinking?) and not get Very Far in Believing GOD Almighty, and What HE said you are Capable of.
Sometimes the Majority is Wrong.
Oh Well.
Hey, Moses didn't get to go Into the Promised Land.
Oh Well.
Ditto...........................................

We can Live to be 120 if you want to, the 70 was only for the Unbelievers in the Desert.

He refused to ask directions.

Seriously, it was because the Hebrews would not have faith when they first arrived at the Promised land. So God had them wander for 40 years (the number 40 being associated with a time of testing).

Because the Hebrews were unfaithful and grumbling after God performed a great miracle by bringing them out of the land of Egypt and slavery, and bringing them across the Red Sea. They would grumble and complain and cast contempt upon God, and worship idols, so He had them wander around for 40 years in the desert to allow the grumbling generation to die off. Then their offspring would be allowed to enter the Promised Land.

The number of years is of no real importance in regards to God's timetable of the world and when humans will be woken up. The years are trials in obedience. It must have been hard to stay on track. Can you imagine the fuss people of today would put up if they were told they were going to wander in the desert for a number of decades?

God said He would lead His people out of slavery, but, they had to learn to trust Him, first. They failed at it alot. He fed them, they complained, He gave meat, the bickered. He was out of sight for a while, they made a gold calf as an idol. Moses, didn't even make it to the promised land, he got angry about water and disobeyed God. Yet, Moses is one of God's closest men.
