because of the size of the player. They made the player that small, so the CD's and DVD's had to be that size.

They tried making 'em smaller, but they just kept getting lost in the depths of women's purses and in the cracks between the sofa cushions. CD's are therefore made to be wider than the typical wallet and wider than the depth of the average sofa cushion.
