Most people don't eat just butter or margarine. They're used a variety of ways, such as spreading toast, or using in recipes. By itself it's not tasty, but together with something else, it's pretty damn good.

because a little butter makes anything better, well maybe not anything, but almost anything you cook, especially baked goods need some type of fat to help them stay together, and butter or margarine is really useful for this.

Well its not tasty if you eat it on its own, but on toast or crackers etc it does taste good. Try eating dry toast with nothing on it. Tastes much better with butter on doesn't it?

That little bit of grease/salt taste good. Also, it stems from what you were fed as a kid. My family loves butter on baked potatoes, rolls, etc. It's tradition i think.

I, myself, find butter to have a very distinctive flavor and I'm sure there are many people that agree to that.

Well, it's one of those things that is not good by itself, but when it is eaten with other things, it brings out better taste.
