my friends and especially my ex gf have always told me I could go somewhere with singing if I were to get a band together. For as long as theyve told me, especially the ex, I felt they were just saying it to be nice and not hurt my feelings because I love music so much. I told them to be honest and they would always say I'm great and should go for it. How do I know if they're telling me the truth or not? I cant exactly tell by listening to myself because I'm not so sure what I hear is what they hear. Ahhh please help.

This is actually several questions. To listen to yourself, record yourself and play it back. The judgement of others determines whether or not you will be a "popular" singer versus a "good" singer (Ex: do you think Neil Young is a good singer, or good writer?) My ex- studied Opera, but could never get breaks in the field because her voice was unsuited - according to voice coaches and such - to it - she switched to Renaissance Fayres and loves it. If you seek an opinion about it, DO NOT ASK Family or Friends - ask professionals - studio musicians - voice coaches, etc. You pay them for their opinion - they will give you their best estimate. Whether it is voice, instrument or whatever, there are only two rules you should abide:
1. They are only opinions. If you don't like it, find another.
2. How do you get to Carnegie Hall? Practice, Practice, Practice.

You just need to go for it. Let the audience decide. Learn an instrument. Get a band together. It's fun.

Go to places, where people hold rehearsals for young talents.
If you have a dream, and never stop striving towards it, you will make it come true!
