I think it is pine wood.... And I wanted to make it slightly darker... But I don't want to ruin it... Any ideas to the best way to do this?
Or who I would check with to have it done professionally? I don't want to spend too much so would like to do it myself if possible... Thank you for any suggestions....

Sand it slightly....then apply one coat of stain. Let it dry and see what you think of the color. If you want it darker, apply another coat, and so on. When you are done, wipe the residue off, and coat with a layer of polyurethane sealer.

If you did not build the house yourself--the beams just maybe in their original state.. You must have a lot of money to spend on nothing. More money than good connon sense. A carpenter would not take on the job--the fee would be unbelieveable. They do not have the time to fool with this senseless home repair.Your house is gona be a mess for a long time. Stain goes deep into the wood and will take a lot of man hours to clean one board--may have to buy a planer. A planer will set you back quite a few sheckles. You sure they are decorator beams or do they hold up the roof or other indoor structor??? Buy a table saw and use vanneer--cut to fit --select the color desired ---saw and cover the beams. Use finishing nails. Small ones. 10 years from now you might want the dark stain back--remove the vanneer. PRESTO Go buy a house that does not have beams and let the people who buy your house worry about the color.

Depending on how valuable the wood is would determine if you should do it professionally.

If you want to do it yourself (and you live in the US) you can go to most hardware stores to get wood stain. You'll need a simple brush and/or sponge to apply the stain and possibly some pretreater. If the wood is pine you will definately need the pretreater before you stain it. The pretreatment 'primes' the wood to be stained. The harder the wood the less pretreatment you need and pine is a very soft wood.

The larger hardware stores (Home Depot, Lowes) will have a large selection of stains. And chances are someone there can help you and tell you how to do it.

If you want to practice before hand, get a simple, inexpensive piece of wood and try to stain it. That way you know how to do it. Although, its a bit like painting so its not terribly difficult.

Good Luck!

Lightly sand the wood and clean the surface afterwards. Find a stain at a local hardware store that suites your taste. Apply with a soft rag, just rub it in. If it's still to light....apply more. You also should consider polyurthane or another type of clear finish if applicable.

if there is a coating on it already then LIGHTLY sand it off, nott to much in a certain area or you will have bumpy wood... then buy the color of stain you want to use and use a Brush NOT a roller and paint one coat at a time... then when the first dries do it again , maybe even a third if you really want to.

if it is raw wood you should not have a problem putting a dark
laqer based stain on it. how ever if it already has a clear coat
or shelac or even wax it will be hard to penetrait. you can always
strip that stuff off . not fun
