The only way I'd give a child that young a cell phone would be if there was some reason she was away from adult supervision. Then the cell phone would be a necessity for safety. But then, why would you leave an eight year old girl alone?

I think 8 is too young for a cell phone, maybe when they are a teenager and if they do well in school. I personally think cell phones have made everyone a little rude.

at that age she is too young, your bill would be through the ceiling, i didnt get a cell phone till i was 13 and that was because i am a natural boy and will do just about anything that will keep me from being bord so my mom needed a way to find out where i was. but 8 is way too young, its your call though, but if you choose so get her a prepaid and make her work for minutes...kind of an allowence, or show her appreciation by adding more minutes for good grades, but a contract phone is too advanced for her age.

I'm with you! Much too young for a cell phone. Who would she need to call? Her friends can talk to her on the home phone. Same with relatives. The only person she NEEDS to call is you, her parents, and she's probably with you all the time anyway, right? I agree with you...8 is too young.

My kids are not allowed their own cell phones and I do not think "all my friends have one" is a good enough reason. I say, "Great, you can borrow theirs!" They are 11, 10 and 8 and they are in school all day so really no need for a cell phone. However, we do have a spare one one at home and they are allowed to take it if they are going somewhere where i need to reach them.

I don't see anything wrong with this. It would be great for emergencies. I would get her a LG Migo or something. Details below. This is a cell phone, but she can't use it to call everyone and rack up a large bill.

LG Migo
Migo from Verizon Wireless is a kid-friendly wireless phone that lets parents and kids stay in touch. It's fun for them, and added peace of mind for you. The Migo phone has a simplified keypad that allows you to program in 4 numbers, an incredible speakerphone and a dedicated emergency key. And with Chaperonesm, you can use your handset or PC to locate your child's Migo. This is the perfect phone to keep kids and parents connected.

I have great input on this subject. My 9-year old wants the same thing. I have decided to get her a phone from verizon. I forgot the actualy name of this phone but it is designed for kids. It only has 4 buttons. you choose which four phone numbers they can call. Example: Mom, Dad, Neighbor, Best Friend. Thats it! No Mobile internet etc.

I have mixed feelings about that!I don't think kids should have cells"just because"But,these days its kind of a safety tool!I mean just look at some of the sick peoples q on here! You just never know when even within seconds of being away from your child that something can happen!Schools aren't even safe anymore!

That is a personal choice. Does she do afterschool activities? Because if it is just from home to school to friends to home. I would think no.

Verizon Wireless has a phone called the migo. There are up to I think 4 set numbers she can dial and recieve calls from. Other than that, she is 8 she can be a social butterfly later.

Check into your wireless carrier to see what they offer. The verizon migo works GREAT for children in afterschool sports.

She is way too young. I think maybe 10 or 11 is the right age. You should ask her "what are you going to use it for", then say I don't think you're ready for it yet, how about when you're old enough I'll surprise you with one. Hopefully she won't be too mad at you. And remember to tell her she has to pay her own bill!!!!!!!
