Well, the true reason is kind of multi-pronged.
Firstly, it was for oil. However, not in the way that the "those evil war mongering republicans are all poopy heads" crowd seem to believe. Like it or not the US economy is highly dependant on foreign oil. The previous regime in Iraq first tried to take over Kuwait, a major producer that sits directly on the gulf. Additionally, that regime made it quite clear that they intended to use their influence on global oil markets in any way they could to harm western economies. Can you imagine a world where a single very anti-American dictator controls 70% of the worlds oil supply and chooses not to sell to us at any price but rather give China, a major rival, access to virtually unlimited supplies at cut rate prices?
Secondly, it was about breaking up the web of state funded terrorism. Like it or not there are a large number of middle eastern fundamentalists who are actively working to wipe America off of the map. This is not some new phenomena that has taken place since we took action in Iraq. This has been brewing for decades. I know that it is an unpleasant realization to some, but America is at war and we did not start it nor did it begin with the invasion of Iraq nor with 9/11. Middle eastern fundamentalists declared war on the US more than a decade ago. Unfortunately, most Americans are too busy carrying on with their normal lives to realize this as a clear and present danger. One of the insidious attributes about international terrorism is that there is no single nation-state that the US can point to as the "enemy". This gives state sponsors of terrorism the luxury of calling the US an aggressive bully when we take action against them. Iraq was one of many enablers in the international terrorism network. There are others. It is my hope that America will not have to learn the hard way that it is better to deal with such threats early even though such actions may not appear politically correct rather than wait until a mushroom cloud erupts over Israel, the UK, or the Eastern coast of the US.

If you are knowledgeable about military strategy and look at a map of the region you will see that Iraq is the most strategic place to have military bases in the area. From the point of view of a commander waging a war on a shadowy enemy that operates in this region, Iraq presents the ideal location for land, air and sea bases of operation. Mission Accomplished!
Saddam had, by his own admission as well as by the testimony of every leader in the free world (including John Kerry, Teddy Kennedy, Bill Clinton and Hillary Clinton), WMDs. Many have been found since our troops invaded but a large number were moved to Syria and Iran and remain a threat.
Controlling the oil supply from the Middle East is, unfortunately, our only option at this point. Our society's dependence on this oil is like a heroin addicts dependence on smack. Cut it off and our society will break down and chaos will ensue. We are not talking just all the cars will stop.....we are talking a massive world- altering event that will lead to lawlessness and worldwide war. Sad as it is, we have no choice but to keep it coming. Nothing to do with who controls the Congress or sits in the White House.

If anyone says oil, don't pay attention their idiots with no grasp of current events or world politics. We invaded because :
1. Saddam violated every article in the Gulf War cease fire
2. He openly supported terrorists
3. He shot at our planes in the no-fly zone
4. He was given a chance to save Iraq the horror it has now by leaving the country and decided it was better for Iraq to suffer than for him to leave in peace.

We invaded Iraq for oil. We invaded Iraq because Iraq is Saudi Arabia's number 1 competition in the oil business. Bush Senior has a job with the Carlyle Group a Saudi owned company that sells weapons. Bush Jr was bankrolled in all of his failed business ventures by the Saudi Royal family. The Bush family has strong ties with the Saudi Government. So We invaded Iraq. LOOK IT ALL UP FOR YOURSELF,
Most of the pilots that flew into the world trade center were Saudi Arabians.
It is also Ironic that the war crimes Saddam Hussein is being charged foe were committed on the very same day we sold him weapons and funded his crimes. Thanks Reagen and Rumsfeld for that one too. They bankrolled him while he was killing babies. that is another fact you can look up for yourself. Ever see a blue dead baby well look it up your taxes funded it .

because america played on the american public after 9/11 and linked it to iraq to hide the fact they wanted iraq's oil. how many innocent civilians have died for this war and still it continues,
what bush has done here will go down in history and for all the wrong reasons. if this continues for years to come bush will end up responsible for more deaths in iraq than saddam.

Anybody that says "Oil" has an I.Q. smaller than their shoe size.
We invaded to take out 1 of the 3 memebers of the "Axis of Evil" and to change the culture of the middle east. Find the texts of Bush's speeches on the matter and he lays it out very clearly. I don't have time to get into all the details, but the details are out there if you are willing to take the time to go find them.
The truth will set you free; but only if you have the will to go find it, and the courage to accept it.

(not really) so our elected officals have put us in a corner and we have to fight our way out or end up havin to fight them later when there stonger.

To get a foothold in the Middle East so that we could further strengthen our access to oil and to strengthen our world political and military power.
Addendum: Why in the world would anyone give this answer a thumbs down. Who could I have offended with this generic response!
