He could have made the money doing yard work. My brother-in-law did very well as a kid doing yard work. Children don't always recognize the value of a dollar or more. I also know that when I did yard work, some people would pay me MUCH more than I asked. Back then I might ask for 8 or 10 dollars and get 20 or 40. Sometimes I could refuse the excess, but they don't take no for an answer very well. You either accept it or get threatened with not getting the job next time.
Another possibility is that he found it at home. Believe it or not, some people do leave money where it doesn't belong and kids find it just like they find guns. The difference is who might get hurt and how.

The only way you'll find anything out is if you talk to the kid's parents. The school will never tell you the end result, nor will law enforcement.
I would have to suspect the kid took the money from his parents. A lot of people keep large amounts of cash at home (or maybe they just took out some money to buy a car, etc. and had the cash sitting there for the day)... I think just about every kid out there has taken money from their parents at some point in their lives.
I'm sure the school informed his parents, so really it's there problem now. I'm like you though... I'd totally want to know how he got it!

Don't give any money back to anyone without an explanation.
Especially not the school personnel. That's not their job or even their jurisdiction.
I'd only give the money back to the kid's parent or a law enforcement officer......but with a plausible explanation.

How about asking this kids parents? You might have a meth lab in the neighborhood...I'm not even kidding.
I guess bringing money is better than bringing a gun, no?

Umm, is that where I dropped my wallet? In someone's backyard? Just post it to me. Strange how it got there when I've never been to Chicago
Otherwise, who else would stash lots of money in someone's messy yard?

Maybe his parents are getting that money from somewhere and he's found out where they keep it and now stealing it from them. Or maybe his parents are just filthy rich idiots who hand out hundreds when people do yardwork..if that's the case, let me know if they're hiring :-)
