the skin at his low back is slightly raised or inflamed. when petted gently, he looks around like there are spots before his eyes and he does a repetitive chewing motion, petting harder seems to irritate him and he snaps at my hand so i'll stop. the vet gave him a shot claiming allergies, but after 48 hours, there is no change. has anyone seen these symptoms in a cat before and have an idea what else it could be?

Well, I'm not sure what the raised skin could be, however, there are a lot of cats who will gaze off into space and do either a chewing or licking motion until you stop. When kittens are born, their mother will lick that same spot to get them to nurse when they're having troubles getting started. Sometimes adult cats revert to instinct of when their mothers used to do it, and of course when you do it to hard, they either bite or swipe a paw at you because it's slightly painful. Hope this helps.

My cat Morris (god rest his soul) used to do that all the time but only after he had an opreration where they had to cut out dead tissue from a very nasty cat fight ( pregnant barn cat got a hold of him) I noticed too that his skin was dry there and he was always biting at it like he had fleas (he didnt). It might be dermelogical. Ask the vet if there is a food you can get or suggest that it might be skin issues seeing as how the skin is inflamed. Morris never did stop doing it until the day he passed away.

My brother's cat does that. Cracks me up because he looks like a robot. When I took him to be neutered for my brother, the vet said he does it because it's irritating to him. Suggested not doing it. lol
