I understand EXACTY what you're asking. In part, your friend has an outtie because she is skinny. Although, it DEFINITELY has everything to do with the way the doctor/daddy cut the cord. On the other hand, what if your friend gained alot of weight? She would not appear to be an outtie anymore because the excess weight in the stomach area sinks the bellybutton inward, although she would still have that extra lump of skin in the bellybutton making her, technically, an outtie.

OK, so here is my interpretation:
My friend was an outtie all her life. Then she got pregnant and was a SEVERE outtie!!! After she had the baby there was alot of lose skin around the belly area. She still technically has an outtie because there is a chunk of skin within the bellybutton that is SUPPOSED to stick out but the excess weight in her belly region sticks out BEFORE the belly button. To an outsider it appears that she has an innie but, indeed, she has an outtie. The only way she would have her outtie again would be if she lost some weight in her belly region. Get it?

I hope that wasn't terribly confusing!

I used to assume that a belly button was an innie or an outie because of the way the doctor cut the cord. When I had my son, I learned that the stump of the cord (a couple of inches, give or take) is left on until it simply falls off (he has an innie...). It heals however it heals - it's really just a scar, and doesn't have anything to do with the person or how the cord was tied or cut.

It really just has to do with the way the ambilical cord was cut at birth. Nothing to do with weight or size. One of my kids has an innie the other an outie. Cute.
