My best friend wears the full niqab- which covers her completely. Only her eyes show. She is very beautiful underneath and when I asked her why she gave me two reasons.
1- because she believes that her physical beauty is for her husband to enjoy. She feels free from competition and jealousies from women. She does not have to have men googling and drooling all over her appearance. Her husband has a lot of respect for her, especially since most of the women here in NYC are dying for attention and to show off as much of their bodies as possible.
2. Secondly, she says she does it to please God, because when you are muslim you should wear something to show people you are muslim. When you do this it is considered a good deed.
When I traveled overseas to Islamic countries I enjoyed wearing the Niqab and felt a sense of security and peace I have never known all my life here in America.

I am a Muslim women and don't cover my face. The veil is a choice. The hijab on the hand is required by ALLAH and is in the Qur'an. Muslim women are required to cover their hair and dress modestly. Holy Qur'an. Sura 24 verses 30-31: "Say to the believing men that they should lower their gaze and guard their modesty; that will make for greater purity for them. And God is well-acquainted with all that they do. And say to the believing women that they should lower their gaze and guard their modesty; that they should not display their beauty and ornaments except what (must ordinarily) appear thereof; that they should draw their veils over their bosoms and not display their beauty except before their husbands, fathers... (and certain other members of the household); and that they should not strike their feet in order to draw attention to their hidden ornaments."

The head is covered, not often the whole face ... anyway, not just the Quaran but also the Bible says it is right for a woman to cover her head as a sign of submission to God (and her father or husband). Different relgions (both the Quran and the Bible share the first five books of the Old Testament) interpret these scriptures in different ways.

Sierra got it right. The majority of them do it to please God. They are not obligated to cover their faces, though there is a sect in Islam that believes it is required and it's a sin not to. It is not in the Quran to cover the face. The Prophet's wives had to cover their faces because they were held in higher regard than Muslim women who were not married to him. For instance, the sins of the Prophet's wives would be multiplied, they would not marry after the Prophet, etc. Muhammad did not make it up, nor did He order them to cover their faces.

covering ones face is mandatory and is in quran. muhammad(pbuh) did not make it up he was told by god to tell his people and thats what he did. when a women covers up her self she is protected from unwanted attention. why do christian and jewish religious women such as nuns cover their entire body. they dont show any thing except their hands and face. you have to cover ur face as well in islam. but some women choose to only stick with scarf because they dont feel so comfortable due to peoples rudness. we are ordered to look good for our husbands where as here women look good to get attention from strangers and sometimes end up being raped or even killed. covering ourself protects us from that. i hope u understand. may allah help us all and guide us to the staight path.
