How do you deal with tele-marketers when they call? I hear that the Do Not Call list is expiring soon. I personally plan to annoy them, give me some ideas as to what to say??

Today most people search for products online or out shopping. And, most people give to charities they know, not over the phone! What bothers me is they aren't really selling anything of value.

And yes, I've done telemarketing and it sucked. It's now antiquated and very impersonal in my opinion.. Can't take a joke? Then don't answer the phone... I mean question!

I love the old episode of Seinfeld where Jerry tells the telemarketer that he is really interested in what they are selling, but is a little busy at the moment and asks the telemarketer for his home number so he can call him back later when he is in the comfort of his own home so that they can discuss it further!

It is my job to deal with telemarketers and sometimes you have to be rude because a lot of them are pushy. They use every trick in the book to try and get through to people who do not even have a say in the purchases within the company from acting like a hurried, annoyed client to the bosses best friend. What makes me angry with these people is they do not realize that the people they want to talk to are busy. They do not have time to sit and hear a sales pitch. If someone were to give 10 min to 6 telemarketers a day, that is 1 hour that they could be spending on work. And the secretaries are the ones who have to stay late an extra hour because they were not able to complete all their work. And the clients are angry because what they need is not finished. Clients are lost and businesses go down. Telemarketers are selfish and rude and do not care about anyone but themselves. If they want to make a sale, they should ask for a way to give their sales pitch via email or fax. Not everyone has the ability to drop everything they are doing to talk to someone about something they do not want to buy!

I try not to encourage telemarketers. I tried doing it myself and found it very pushy and invasive. I thought it was criminal even if not against the law.
it took me 3 weeks to come to that conclusion. I was given a product and a list of phone numbers that had already accumulated. I began phoning. A good percentage had already been called by someone else at the same business for the same sale, and I was told that when I had done all that I could do with those numbers to pass them along and get another list of numbers..In point of fact, I believe that what I was doing, what that company was doing, should be illegal. {I lasted 3 weeks}.
I love the answer given by NeNe.

Most like those that have answered this question already, think by playing "games" with telemarketers is fun.
Well what waste of your time....and who really has egg on their face. Most telemarketers are being paid for their time anyways and if they are working on commision, it is because they do their job well and would spot you in a new york minute anyways.
Plus remember, that is someones son or daughter, mother, father, even maybe someones grandma on the other end
Instead ask yourself why you would be interested, because that we be the first thing I will find out from you when I call

IN ADDITION
Any thing of value?? In the years I have been calling I have put together deals all on the phone, with people I have never met, worth millions of dollars....that is value

Wasting their time is probably the best bet. Telemarketers can be paid on commission or have quotas about how many calls they need to get done, so putting them on hold or letting them drone on thinking they might make a sale is a great idea.

I get really annoyed at tax-exempt organizations that call asking for donations. They don't have to follow the Do Not Call list. One time I told them I'd make a donation but I needed to get my check book. I put them on hold for 15 minutes before they got the idea and hung up. Serves them right for wasting my time.

Here's a great link for some tactics to annoy telemarketers.

ok, this is the BEST invention on earth. It recognizes telemarketing calls and plays a pre-recorded conversation that will give telemarketers nightmares.

Here is a flash demo of this gadget in action.

It makes me laugh so much that I can't wait for telemarketers to call. YOU WILL LOVE IT!

I deal with telemarketers simply. If I don't want their product I say "thank you for your call I am not interested, please take me off of your list and inform your company/companies I do not wish to be contacted in the future. Have a nice day>"

The person who is doing the call is only doing it to make a paycheck. If it was you calling how would you like to be responded to. I think it is civil to just be honest and polite...but firm.

jkimlosan: I tried the website. You're right, it's hilarious. Are these people not allowed to hang up or something?
We get calls lately from a major credit card company (the same one) every couple of days. My husband today said:
"If I use this card to buy a used car and drive it off a cliff, will my dependents be liable to pay it off?" She said, "That's not a very nice way to think, Sir." He then said, "You know what else is not a nice way to think? Another f**king credit card!"
