It's really more about high calorie and low activity combined with very fatty snack foods and you gain weight. Alcohol itself isn't fattening the lack of activity it promotes is. When the average person drinks they slow down and tend to eat more this is why they have more weight gain.
Here is a more scientific answer from Wikipedia:
Beer and weight gain
The primary energy-bearing constituents of beer are alcohol and carbohydrates; beer has no fat and very little protein content. Light beers and low-alcohol beers carry less food energy than other beers [2]. Even heavier beers carry less energy per glass than sugared cola drinks, and one study has shown that non-drinkers adding a single serving of alcohol to their diet daily does not contribute to weight gain. Other studies have also found alcohol consumption to be unassociated with weight gain, for reasons not yet understood. However, some beer drinkers consume high-calorie junk food—such as potato chips—alongside beer, while others simply drink inordinate amounts of beer. For instance, a 40 U.S. fluid ounce (1.2 liter) bottle of MGD (Miller Genuine Draft), which might be consumed as a single serving by a heavy drinker, contains about 485 calories (2,030 kilojoules).

Beer is not fattening. It is reletively low on calories. And don't believe the peole who will say "its the carbs" Vegetables are carbs and people don't say "why do vegetables make me fat"
The problem is what we consume with the beer. Pizza, nachos wings or the amount we drink in combination with sedentary lifestyle that make us fat. That said, the body can only metabolize a certain amount of alcohol in a given period, after it reaches a certain pint it just stores the calories as fat.

Beer isn't fattening. It actually has no fat in it, typically.
However, it *is* somewhat calorie rich and full of empty calories, which can be assigned to fat. But techinally, it's not fattening at all, as is evident by a 0g fat on the nutrition label.

It has to do with more than just the beer. It's the lifestyle a lot of people have. Coupled with the fact that people drink a lot and don't exercise means you're adding pounds.
Just ask yourself how many beers you drink in a sitting and how many calories your body needs a day. Then you'll see why people get fatter from beer.

Beer contains no fat, so, technically, it cannot be fattening. That doesn't mean you won't gain weight from drinking it.

There's the caloric factor (one lite beer = 100 calories) and also the fact that alcohol slows your metabolism.
