It derives from Middle English `pere `(before the year 1000), via Old English `peru` from the Latin `pira`. The botanical name of the tree is `Pyrus`.

I saw some avocado pears today at my local fruit shop... Not sure if it was some kind of freak of nature though. Looks like pears are about to take over the world as we know it.
