Usually a mother dog will only do that if she senses there is something wrong with the pup. There could have been something wrong that you were unaware of. I'm sorry she did that, that's so sad!

The Mother only does that when a puppy is sick. She gets rid of the puppy so the others won't get sick. I had a Cat do that and I was so mad at her but the vet told me not to be mad at her because she was doing her best to protect her other babies so they wouldn't get sick. Also, if she was still feeding them she might not have had enough milk to feed them all so she got rid of the weakest. I hope at 8 weeks old if it was a big litter they have stopped nursing. This could have saved the runt and the Mother could save her milk for him/her. So very sorry you had to know of this happening because I was so devastated when I saw my cat do that.

Inexperienced moms will sometimes do this because the pup startles them or they just don't know any better. Some dogs will do it because the pup is not well. However, this usually happens when the pup is just days old. I have never heard of a dog doing this to an 8 week old pup. I can only imagine that the mom knew something that no one else did about the pup's health or temperament. How terrible. I hope your friend plans to spay her; this may have just been a fluke, but I don't know that I would want her to be raising any more pups.

It is natural. More than likely the runt wouldn't have made it or something is wrong with it internally. I know being a mother of three great little girls, I can smell a certain smell when one of them has an infection. I would just watch her with the others. They should be ok though.

That is truly unusual. I have heard of several female doing that when pups are first born but, never on a pup that age. Was the pup really eaten or just killed? Let us know if you find out anything. Very rare

Usually when a mother dog kills one of her babies, it is when the baby is very young and is very weak. I have never heard of a mama dog killing a baby after it got to be 8 weeks old. Something doesn't seem right.

you may desire to ask your vet to verify for particular, on the grounds that there are various the rationalization why she could have eaten her very own domestic canine. The domestic canine are meant to verify the vet numerous cases in the previous they attain 8 weeks (once you may provide them up) in any case. For destiny reference, you may desire to get your canine spayed, because of the fact she would be waiting to devour her domestic canine returned, and not being spayed is somewhat undesirable for a canine's wellbeing-do no longer enable her to have the different domestic canine. additionally, bear in mind that if she isn't spayed, there's a severe danger that she would be waiting to get mammary maximum cancers/tumors while she gets slightly older. Spaying is somewhat significant.

It does happen. Sometimes called survival of the fittest. Even if the puppy seemed to be healthy, she may have sensed some sort of flaw or defect in the puppy that caused her to do that.
