I don't want to learn a martial art and I don't want to kick anybodys butt. I work in a bar and normally always talk my customers out of being stupid but I want to be prepared for the day I have to escort somebody out. So a short course that I can take (and re-take?) is what I'm after.

How about ask around at police dept.? I know sometime they offer seminars in few things.

Also you may want to find a executive protective service or bodyguard school with very good reputation.

Take some psychology classes can help too. I use to have a psychology teacher who was a negotatier for polices, that guy was scary with his words. He can really get into person mind and maniuplate them.

if you dont wanna just kick some1 butt i suggest especially dealing with rowdy people and if you dont want a law suit to learn an art that will immobile and restrain the person oppose to just inflicting pain so maybe a grappling art aikido is very good for immoblizing you make harmony with the attacker and neutralize it, maybe look into brazilian juijitsu, krav maga is a really good self defense but you'd probably hurt them pretty bad with it but it does deal with every day attacks: grapples, knife, and gun defense. jeet kune do is good to fot self defense
