Is he neutered? Males can smell females in heat from a long distance. Neutered males still have the "want" for this too, but not as badly as un-neutered. Here recently, we purchased the "invisible fence". It has a collar that shocks them, and I was worried that it would be mean to treat our dogs like this, so my husband put the collar around his arm, and made our kids push the "zap" button oon the remote. It wasnt as bad as people try and make it seem. The shock is painless, it just is enough to scare your dog and make him want to stay away from that "weird feeling"

Is he neutered? Usually a neutered dog won't run off so if he isn't, I'd try that. I would do the laser fence because that's just cruel, it's shock therapy. If you live by a very busy highway and you've tried everything else, then MAYBE as a last resort to keep him safe but I wouldn't suggest it being a first choice. There's also whistles and clickers you can buy. Basically, it's up to you to train him not to do it. Obedience training will work as well.

Your dog may be bored and lonely being tethered in the yard. He might do better if you can take him for daily walks at least once a day a long walk (if you aren't doing this already) and try and take him to a dog park regularly where he can "run with the pack" and socialize. Your dog will look forward to this. Do as much as you can to get your dog out regularly. Even though the tether may allow the dog space to run around in the yard, dogs are social creatures and like to be with their kind and also with their people. A yard confines them regardless of how big it is. Your dog has a need to get OUT every day. Hence the daily walks.

We had the same problem - our dog was digging under the fence. We nailed gutter spikes every 6" into the ground where he was digging and he can't get out anymore. It's a cheap solution - the gutter spikes are like 80 cents a piece at the Home Depot.

I keep my dogs attention focused on me at all times on leash or off.
They are very active both mentally and physically.Everydays a new adventure.
My dogs are a part of my family.Their needs are met before my own.I tend the hurts.I brush their coats.I feed and water them.I give them guidance, direction and discipline.I show them respect and consideration and love and get it back 100 times more than it's given.
My dogs refuse to go outside without me evan tho we have a huge fenced in yard. They have too good a time with me to run off. They might miss something.

Install an invisible fence. My daughter did this. Everytime the dog crosses the 'invisible' fence line - he/she receives an electrical shock (they must also be wearing a certain type of collar). A few times of this and they won't be running off any more.

it depends on if he does it while your home or not home.

if he does it while your home, make sure he can listen to come and stop from a dead run when you call him... you can teach this by using a field rope ( at pet stores) and working with come while he's on the rope. If he runs by getting out of his collar while on walks, then maybe a pinch collar would take care of him slipping out. (They are very humane)

If he does it when you are gone i would suggest some knew toys..something to keep him busy while you're gone. the reason he runs would be because he is bored with the yard. PetsMart has dog puzzles that would help to keep him entertained, if a puzzle isn't to your liking a new bone would do the trick as well.

hope this helps!

The underground fences work great.
Since you already have a fence up why not run you some hot wire around your fence. Go to a farm supply place get a fence box along with wire some insulators for your fence . Then hook the insulators where ever you need them

Your best bet is to get into an obedience class where they will help you teach your dog recall/come. There's a world of benefits from a few good classes and you don't want your dog heading for the road with a car coming and not to be able to recall him to your side.

Sounds like the collar is to loose if he can slip out of it, it just might be as simple as getting a good fitting collar that he can not slip his head out of. remember you do'nt want it to tight . If he is escaping from the backyard you really should invest in a good size dog run depending on dog size it"ll run you about 400.00 dollars for a six by twelve. but is worth the peace of mind of knowing he is safe, when your not around.
