My son has a 1997 Avenger

The Dodge Avenger is a cross between a Dodge and a Mitsubishi. Most replacement parts for this car are VERY expensive.

We just replaced a transmission. $1500

Priced a replacement exhaust cross over pipe. $1000

Most parts are made by Mitsubishi and can only be purchased through the dealer.

I'm not surprised that it costs $500 for a starter.

Car Parts Wholesale has one for about $140 + shipping. This is for a V6. You would need to find someone to install it though.

I would normally say yes. A new starter costs about $200. So labor shouldn't be more than $100. But on some Dodges, an intrepid for example of that vintage that you are speaking of, they hid the starter at the bottom of the car behind the right front wheel. This greatly increases installation time and difficulty as you have to remove the wheel and go under the car.

$500 is a bit expensive.
Its not easy to do...But the part is anywhere between $150-$225, plus another $150 for labor...

Here is how you replace it:

If your set-up is the same you should have a crossmember that mounts with two bolts in the front and one in back. there is a motor mount connected to it. take all this off. then you can pretty easily access your starter which is located beside your oil pan at the rear of the motor on the front side of the car. there are 4/5 bolts you have to remove. I belive there are two you have two remove from the backside and three from the front side.

Not for the amateur. It does take some time, and is not really labor intensive, more time consuming..

I have a 96 Avenger ES and had my starter replaced about 2 months ago. I have a friend that did it for me and he's a mechanic. he told me that he had to remove my exhaust system from the manifold back to access the starter. The starter went for around $125, but he has connections and got the part for almost cost. He said it took about 2-3 hours to get it done.

Yes. But if you lived near me I'd gladly do it for that, should be less than $100 for parts and less than an hour's work. Did you take it to your friendly Chrysler dealer or a used car dealer? Shop around. Most places charge like $50 an hour for labor now. So assuming $100 for new starter (rebuilds cost less but won't last as long)and two hours labor = $200. You know some guy is going to hate us, please don't tell!

The best way is to find someone that can give you a second opinion. It may be a battery cable that's corroded or damaged and this is a heck of a lot less expensive than swapping out a starter or alternator. $800 is reasonable, but I change out my own parts and do a thorough diagnosis before changing anything. Hope this helps

$500 is too much. If you went to the dealer, they will rob you. You can always take the car to an independent mechanic and pay a lot less. That is what I do if there is something I cannot fix myself.

Sounds VERY pricey.

Why not shop around first for the parts at several parts stores(phone).

Labor to do that job should be no more than 1.5 to 2 hours.

Yes, it is. I would eBay for parts and then ask any guys you can to help look for a great deal. If you go with a car-smart looking guy, nobody'll try to rip you off as badly.
