Well I've lived with dogs my whole life but they've always either been house trained or a puppy from a shelter where it was already being house trained. My boyfriend and I picked this buddy up last night from a pet store and I didn't realize how much of a bad idea it was to get a pet store puppy because they're basically trained to eliminate in their crate.

I called the store this morning because he's basically been holding it to go in the crate. I can sit for hours with him outside or at the pad at the door and he'll just hold it until I put him back in his crate. They told me to try putting the pads in his crate without the divider, but they didn't tell me when to start moving it to the door. He's 12 weeks old now so when should I start working him into the outside? Any other advice would be helpful.

Start immediately. The longer you wait, the longer it will take for him to be potty trained. If in his crate is the only place he will go, yes, start by putting the pad in there. Gradually move it out of the crate and closer to the door. If he is having a really ruff time, there is a pheramone spray you can buy that encourages dogs to eliminate where it is sprayed. I used that when litter training my min pin and it worked well. If/when you do take him outside to go potty, make sure you use the same phrase of encouragment (example: "go potty" or "potty"). When he does eliminate outside, give him lots and lots of praise ("good potty!!! in your best mommy voice). It may take him awhile since most dogs from breeders are started on training already by 6 weeks of age. He'll get there though, don't worry. Good luck and congrats on the pup!

They eliminate in their store crates because they either have no choice, the crate is too big, or it falls through the bottom. A dog is a pack animal and will not eliminate in it's den where it sleeps. If he is eliminating in his crate then the crate is probably too big for him. There should only be enough room in the crate for him to stand up, turn around, and lie down. If there is room to eliminate in the crate and sleep away from it then he will eliminate in the crate. Make it smaller any way you can. go to dogtrainingbasics.com to get a good article on crate training and house breaking.

Make sure you have treats for him so you can reward him when he goes outside and give him lots of praise. If its a smaller breed then house breaking can take longer.

Trust me, go get the article. It is not hard and the puppy will be alot happier as he learns to go outside, get his treats, and attention from you.

oh the poor little thing. He´s obviously just been left in the cratein the pet shop. The best thing to do is take him in the garden every half an hour, eventually he will need to go to the toilet. When he does it outside just make a massive fuss and take a treat with you. he will soon get it. good luck. just give him lots of love

If you have your own yard you can start moving the pad outside now. If you are going to be taking the pup on the street where other dogs are walked wait until he has had all his vaccinations and the vet says that it is safe for him.

I have a puppy who would also go in her cage which made it IMPOSSIBLE to potty train her. We ended up putting her in the kitchen with a baby gate and left her cage open and a pee pad on the floor. She seemed to prefer to use the pad to pee so she could sleep happily in her cage. You can also buy a spray with the pads that smells like urine to the dog (but not to us thankfully) so they learn where to go. Also clean out the cage VERY well. The dog will tend to go where they smell their pee b/c they know they are allowed to go there.
