(Our Queensland heelers have knocked our socks off with their cunning, their reasoning ability, their "human" type of intelligence.) What other breeds are smart?

"Staffie lover"---do you mean American Staffordshire terriers? We had one, our Toffee, who was extremely loving, gentle, and bright!

All dogs are intelligent in their own ways. It depends on us, as humans, to see each dogs for who it really is to be able to fully appreciate it. (That's why everybody says that they're dog is the best, or the smartest!) It's also up to us to allow the dogs to share their intelligence with us. We have to take care of them, train them, give them jobs, and love them. We also have to let them be animals once in a while. I think there are many factors that contribute to whether or not a dog is considered intelligent by humans.
Mutts are smart too!

Golden Retrievers and Labrador Retrievers are exceptionally smart! They learn very fast and are very gentle dogs, great for kids. My Mom has a golden and she knows she's not allowed on the furniture so when the cat gets on there, she gently drags her off every time. She has even kept my kids from leaving the yard when they were smaller. Very smart dog! My lab is only a puppy (9 weeks old) and I am amazed at how fast she has learned, already picked up on give me paw and speak after only showing her once.

I have owned more than a half dozen dogs in my life and I have to say my current dog, a 15 week old Bichonpoo is by far the smartest dog I ever owned. She is probably superior to most purebreds. She is a mellow sweetheart that is easily trainable and quickly learns everything.

Staffies, most dogs are intelligent iit depends how you bring them up and train them, as a Queenslander heeler is a working dog so it will have different instinks of its own.

A recent study done in the UK suggests that Border Collie mixes (i.e. border collie mix with german shepard etc.) are the smartest dogs in the world.
With that said, if you're looking at getting a really smart dog, they require more attention then the average dog.

I think they're all brilliant, but our Jack Russell Terrier is the sharpest dog I've seen.

Greyhounds...they are so much more than you see on a race track. They are quiet, placid, and smart as a whip. Also very funny and loving.
