I would just leave him alone. He'll eventually grow out of it. Rubbing pepper oil on his hand is a bad idea, because he could rub his eyes and get the oil in his eyes. The pepper oil could also burn his hands (and it seriously hurts - I got pepper oil on my hands once while I was cooking with them and my hands hurt for hours - it's not something you should subject a little kid to on purpose). Really, anything you do to try to get him to stop will only call attention to his habit and reinforce the behavior. It's best to just ignore it and let him drop it when he's ready.

Is he happy and content? If the answer is yes, leave him alone. He'll grow out of it. I am a teacher and still have a few students who suck their thumb, or a finger. I quietly remind them to stop and let them know about germs. My daughter was born sucking her thumb and continued to suck her thumb just at night until she was 13. She was the most content child I had and I attribute that to her thumb-sucking. Good luck!

I have heard of adults that still suck their thumbs when stressed! If they only suck their hand to self soothe, eg when upset or tired I cant see the harm in it. Kids need some sort of security especially at this age. My little boy sucks his fingers to get him off to sleep or if hes upset or tired and I cant see what harm it does at all. If hes still at it when he goes to school - do something about it then!

Was he using a pacifier that you took away? My daughter sucked on a pacifier and I took it away ate age 2. She is now 6 and still sucks on her finger. We have tryed everything to get her to stop and she just does it uncontiously.

I use onions on my nails so I don't bite them anymore so you could use something of that sort. They will stop from the taste after one suck they won't do it again.

you must be a bad parent that your child is doing that. Maybe you should let your mother look after the child.

When we were kids, we got red pepper on our thumbs to break us of thumbsucking. It worked.
