By no means is this meant to be disrespectful.

I know that followers of Christ are called Christians.
Followers of Judaism are called Jews.
Follwers of Buddah are Buddists.

Why are followers of Islam called Muslim? Again, not trying to be disrespectful. It just struck me today as odd.

Dear sister, your question is not disrespectful.

"The name for the religion of Islam is much more than just a name because it expresses a deep spiritual meaning as well as an overall outlook on life and concept of worship. The word "Islam" is an Arabic word which means "complete submission to the will of Almighty God". Other religions are named after their founders, such as Christianity and Buddhism; after a tribe or ethnic group, such as Judaism; or after a specific geographical region, such as Hinduism. Islam, however, is unique because its name represents its outlook on life and reflects its universal nature. Additionally, the name "Islam" was not thought up by its followers or applied by other people, as is the case with the names of other religions, but was revealed by Almighty God. This name expressed nothing new, because submission to the will of God, i.e. "Islam", has always been the true religion of God. Due to this fact, and since the teachings of Islam are straightforward, profound and logical, Islam is the "Natural Religion" of all human beings. The name of no other religion carries any significant message, or conveys the true sense of its outlook on life, as does the name "Islam"."

Muslim is an Arabic noun derived from the Arabic noun Islam. Since Islam is an Arabic noun, it's more logical to use Muslim to call its followers. If you think we should use an English derviative (Islamists for example), then we should use Submission instead of Islam (in the first place) and Submitters for Muslims & make it all in English. But since names usually used in their language, we say Islam & Muslims not Submission & Submitters.

Also, Arabs (not Muslims) usually use their own names when using another language. For example, we use Allah (the Arabic name for God) even when we speak English.

I am no Muslim.Yet I will try to answer this question. Arabic is a very rich language. The grammar is tough. The pliability of language and deriving many words from one root word make Arabic a great language. Sanskrit is another language with some similarities to Arabic. Muslim is derived from Islam. One who follows Islam is a Muslim.

We are called Muslims in the Quran, i.e. in Arabic. I don’t know why its the same in English. We cannot be questioned for a word in the English language.
