It changed biology from observational to analytical science. The science of heredity, turned to genetics with Mendel and Morgan, the molecular genetics with Watson and Crick. This has had a massive impact on food production, medicine, and criminology. The single biggest effect on our current mindset is the Darwin Awards. Unfortunately, we went through the era of Social Darwinism, and saw efforts at eugenics. People may still use Darwinism as an excuse for racism, but similar excuses preceded "Origin of Species".

In the same way that the heliocentric theory of Copernicus did. It caused a lot of controversy and many people fought against it, and even though it is pretty well proved today there are still a few kooks, like the flat Earth society, who do not accept it. I think this fight against evolution will be just as embarrassing to future Christians as the persecution of Galileo is to the Catholic Church today.

as far as "Darwinian" evolution, it really has not had any significant contribution to practical science. It has given Naturalists a straw to grasp as they seek a philosophy to prop up their naturalistic world view. Socially and Politically, it has been used to foster genocide and conquest of the "inferior races" by those who thought themselves more superior as Hitler and the Japanese did in WW ll. Understanding micro evolution has helped the medical field produce medicines and the agriculturists to produce better crops.
