You put salt on the ice cube, causing it to melt, then put the string in the melted section. Shortly, the ice will re-freeze, trapping the string inside. Pull the string and the cube will be pulled out.

Um, I would just strech the string across the top of the glass to hold the ice cube in, then pour the water down the sink and plop the cube onto the table. Presto! Now I have something to throw at my dorky brother for coming up with this time waster.

take the string and lay it across the ice cube. Sprinkle a dash of salt onto the ice and wait for about a minute. Now, pull the string, and out comes the ice cube!

You put the salt you are using for your eggs on the string or the ice and the salt will stick to the ice which will in turn attach the string to the ice and then u pull it out.

You put the string thing under the ice...and ii did not get this from the other people....and then yooh put salt on the ice cube making or causing it to melt...then yooh get it and take it out

It does work, if anyone doubts. My brothers & I amused ourself with this occasionally on rainy days. Flaked sea salt or rock salt doesn't work so well, if you were wondering ...
