I'm in the same boat as you. I'm broke most weeks and when I do have money it never is enough to get help.

I finally got help after my last suicide attempt. I probably had an easier time at it then you will..as I worked for the post office at the time and they offer counciling for free.

I was directed to a place called ComCare. They help broke people get the help they need fast so they don't hurt themselves.

You should try looking through your phone book for city help for depression. (My help is coming from the city) If your city has it and they probably do you will get discounted medication, therapy and other services.

It is really worth a looking for if you are seriously thinking of hurting yourself.

I think the easiest way would be to look for a suicide hotline number and they can help you out there.

Good luck and stay strong.

There is more than 1 type of depression. Some respond best to counseling, others to medications, and some require both. A visit to any regular doctor (about 75 dollars) should answer your question. If medication is required ask the physician to be considerate - not everyone has prescription insurance - and even if they do there are usually generics that will work as well for a lower co-pay. Those on anti depressants are typically seen every 6 months and blood tests (also about $75) are done.

If you are in the US, contact the local county mental health clinic (or department). You should be able to find it somewhat easily in the phone book, either towards the beginning, under resources. Or under your counties name, then look for mental health (ex: orange county mental health). These places work on a sliding scale fee, if you have little or no income, it can be as low as $1.

Also, if you are near a place where a clinical research study is being done, you can possibly get free treatment.

Well in our neck of the woods each town or shall I say county has a clinic for residents at little or no charge, you may want to check with your physician for these services or go to your towns web site and see if they have the information posted there.

Teaching hospitals, research hospitals, and community mental health centers. (The hospitals usually have outpatient treatment, I am not suggesting you need to be in the hospital). Get out the good old yellow pages and start calling...ask if they have fees based on income for those who have little money and no insurance.

Contact your local/county department of social services. If you have no insurance and are low income, they will get you seen. Most have a mental health department.

Do you have Family and Children's Services (FCS) or Lutheran Social Services (LSS) in your area? You didn't state where you are, but you could do a quick check on yellowpages.com. They have free/sliding fee therapy available with psychologists and psychiatrists.
