Lexapro is tough. It can take 6 weeks to start working and it can be really frustrating at first. As your doctor for something else to help you in the mean time. It's a really hard time, while the lexapro is taking effect you can be nauseous and feeling worse. It's pretty strange that things work like that but its often the case that you feel worse before you start feeling better. Tell your doctor you aren't feeling well. It's not okay to not feel well. You took the first step by getting help for your depression and taking lexapro so way to go you, you're taking care of yourself. I'm not sure if you have anxiety, but if you're anxious about this all it can be pretty stressful. I understand it's really sucky right now. There are many drug options you can discuss with your doctor. I would discuss your feelings with them and tell them that until the lexapro takes full effect that you need something to help you out to take when you're just not feeling yourself and feeling really down to take the edge off. Then you can slowly go off of that once lexapro is taking full effect. Another thing is the dosage of lexapro. There are different amounts you can take but these are all things you need to discuss with your doctor. Any anti-depressant can cause you to think of suicide so it's important to tell your doctor any and all of your feelings, write them down?

It sucks, trust me I know. When you need help you will know it...I think you should talk to a therapist and see your doctor. Lexapro has some gross side effects at first. But don't worry it will be alright.

Maybe talking to someone about everything you are feeling will help. Or at least writing it all down.

The hard part is when it hits you and you just feel really down. I take meds continuously that help me but sometimes you need a little extra help, and that help may or may not be medicine. You should really talk to your doctor.

You are trying to help yourself, and yes it sucks a lot feeling like this. I know it feels just like you don't wanna do anything but you have to keep positiv. You want to get better, thats obvious and the beginning of feeling better can suck, but hang in there talk to someone who makes you feel good and definately see your doctor this week.

It's okay, it sucks at first but I am so proud of you for getting help. Hopefully the lexapro will help you through this right now and eventually you won't need it anymore. Good lucK!

medical experts say to give it 6 weeks to fully take effect. I had a hard time with lexapro, it made me mean. Pay attention to your signs and if you are concerned over how you are feeling consult the doctor at once. In some cases the side effects can lead to suicide without warning. I would talk to your doctor if you are on the brink of having a breakdown.. Thats the last thing you want to happen, they have pills that will calm you down imediately, if this isn't an all the time problem, you might want to look into a short term solution instead of having to wait 6 weeks for relief from anxiety and depression.much luck

people are going to tell you different things because everyone is different and everybody has had different experiences...
i am taking Lexapro too. i've been taking it for a few months now and it still hasn't helped me :( but that doesn't mean it won't help you. you've only been taking it for 2 weeks, it takes up to 3 weeks for it to start working.
if u can still do simple, normal activities then u probably don't have severe depression. then again, i'm not a doctor...only a doctor can tell you if it's severe or not. if you have severe depression you wouldn't be able to get out of bed in the morning without reeeally pushing yourself. if u had severe depression, you would break down pretty frequently...

please ask your doctor...

5mg is not a very high dosage which may be the cause of no relief. However typically it'll take approx 4-6 weeks before you'll know if it's truly the right medicine for you so try and be patient (although i know it's tough!). If this the first time trying medication and you've successfully nailed it on the head than congrats to you and your doctor! I know many times it's trial and error (through real life experience and research) and it takes a variety of options before you find the right medication that you react well to. Hang in there and don't EVER give up :) Unfortunately there are a handful of us who have been given the challenge of anxiety. I've recently learned that totally getting rid of anxiety is impossible. It's the process of learning how to cope with it is what'll lead you down a successful path in life. Feel free to email me if you have any questions. I have been down a long road of coping with GAD and panic attacks and understand the daily minute to minute frustrations. I'd love to help in anyway possible Good luck.

Though we all respond differently to medications, I had excellent success with Lexapro for depression with a lot less side effects than other meds I have been on. It could have been the discussion that triggered your reaction. I suspect you will experience less and less episodes of depression over the next few weeks...if you don't...then get your tail back to the doctor...promise.

It is generally agreed that acute episodes of major depressive disorder require several months or longer of sustained pharmacological therapy beyond response to the acute episode. Systematic evaluation of continuing LEXAPRO 10 or 20 mg/day for periods of up to 36 weeks in patients with major depressive disorder who responded while taking LEXAPRO during an 8-week, acute-treatment phase demonstrated a benefit of such maintenance treatment (see Clinical Efficacy Trials, under Clinical Pharmacology). Nevertheless, patients should be periodically reassessed to determine the need for maintenance treatment.

A major depressive episode (DSM-IV) implies a prominent and relatively persistent (nearly every day for at least 2 weeks) depressed or dysphoric mood that usually interferes with daily functioning, and includes at least five of the following nine symptoms: depressed mood, loss of interest in usual activities, significant change in weight and/or appetite, insomnia or hypersomnia, psychomotor agitation or retardation, increased fatigue, feelings of guilt or worthlessness, slowed thinking or impaired concentration, a suicide attempt or suicidal ideation.

Stop eating junk foods. A health food diet will help rid depression.

Anti-depressant drugs have serious side effects. A specialist once put me on anti-depressants for neck pain. The medication gave me constant OBEs (out of body experiences), I couldn't add 2+3, and I didn't give a damn about anything, la, la, la. It also didn't take the pain away.

So, I went alternative health care. Changed my diet to only health food and the pain went away.

It is normal to be depressed when something rotten happens, but if you are just depressed for no apparent reason you really need to change your diet.

I'm having the same problem...with the drug...that is.

I'm taking lexapro now for almost 3 weeks and I've yet to feel anything but the side effects. I've almost given up on the drugs but I know that I need them.

Talk to your doctor about it. They may tell you to hang on and wait it out...that is what they told me anyway...but they maybe able to fix the problem

Good luck and stay strong

It takes longer than two weeks for the medicine to work . Just hang in there and give it like 6 weeks and you should see some improvement . I had a complete breakdown last year and landed it the hospital for 5 days so i know how you feel . The meds took along time to get into my blood stream . Hang in there and things will improve .Good luck !

Lexapro is NOT for bi-polar disorder, my son was given Lexapro for supposed depression and it triggered a manic episode. Turned out to be a blessing because it got him diagnosed quickly, but it messed him up so bad he was in a psych hospital for 4 days!
