I was recently released from my job due to cutbacks here in Houston, TX. THanksgiving and Christmas is coming and I was wondering does anyone know where I can get assistance in providing some food for my children and possibly gifts. At this point I am desperate and willing to accept any help I can get. It would break my heart if I had to let my children know that I cannot provide for them. Thanks

Your employer had to be paying unemployment insurance, so you can start by filing a claim at the unemployment office. This is not welfare, employers are required to pay insurance for this so that people don't just get cut off of all income should they get laid off. It is less than what you were making, but there is nothing withheld (careful because this could make things tough aroung April 15). Type of your resume, maybe get a professional to do it, and post it on the Monster board, it's free. Use their search engines and different profile to find the work you would like. While you are searching, call up the Temp Agencies and see if they have anything available for you. Some job go Temp to hire these days so the Co gets a chance to see what you have before they actually sign you on. Problem, some companies say temp to hire but they just say that to get you to work like your future depends on it, then, when they are caught up with the backlog, they say they don't need you anymore. Good Luck.

Try talking to the people at Resurrection MCC 714.861.9149 I don't know what their charity programs are like, but our MCC offers both a food pantry and Christmas adoption.

You may want to check with your local churches. I know the ones up here (in CT) have a list you can go on where the people who attend that church will donate based on what you need (not your name). Best of luck to you.
