My mother is in a home now for the last 6 months.I spend every 2nd night there till 9 pm with her.She is blind and cannot walk and spends her hours crying because of dementia and depression .They are trying do what they can with medication but its a hit and miss most times.
What I would like to find is something for her to do with her time instead of thinking too much..she has use of her hands so something that would keep her hands and mind busy at the same time would be great. She dont like those audio books. I am looking forward to any ideas you might have
thanks

Maybe you could play cards with her or bring in some type of craft for her like knitting, crocheting or needlepoint. Don't they have any projects or classes for them there? Alot of the homes have bingo or crossword puzzles, etc. Try to get her more involved in the activities there. You could talk to a nurse or the manager of the place and tell them to come and get her for the activites whether she wants to go or not. The worst thing for her to do is to sit there and think all day. Good Luck.

Is it at all posible for her or her insurance to pay for LIVE IN CARE? Get her back in a house and a live in. The live in's have all day to be there and give her full attention and can keep her busy with other things.

They don't have enough time in a home to give one on one attention.

IF not that........can she knit? How about draw, fingerpaint?
Try getting an assortment of different sized nuts and bolts, put them all in a shoe box or container, and if she can concentrate long enough, she can keep her hands and mind alert to find the right bolt that fits the right nut.

Could the people in the facility get involved with things like putting together packages for military personnel overseas? Sorting things by feel.

You might contact organizations that deal with the blind about what might be good.

Having people to talk to is very important. It is a real killer for everybody when someones dementia reaches the point that they don't remember anybody.

Good luck.

Have her learn how to crochet or knit. I have a niece who suffers from bipolar and crocheting helped her mind focus.

The best of luck with your mother and God will Bless you for taking great care of her.
