Jesus toldhis disciples that if they have faith they can even ask a mountain to jump into the ocean, and it will happen. But what did he say specifically they have to believe? Please provide references if you can.
Or is it possible that the faith he talked about was different from believing something?

2mehear, your answer is interesting. So in your opinion, Jesus was challenging his disciples to see God in a human being living among us and doing good instead of as a distant, imaginary being unrelated to our life.

Philip one of the disciples ask Jesus to show them the Father. And Jesus answered him: 'have I been w/ you for just a short time, how come you are asking me to show you the father? Those who have seen me has seen the Father. If you don't believe me, then believe in the WORKS that I did'.
In short Jesus was telling the disciples that he did what his Father would have done if He came to earth. Just like a son, doing the works of a father--we say: 'like father, like son'.

Galations 2:16Â "knowing as we do that a man is declared righteous, not due to works of law, but only through faith toward Christ Jesus, even we have put our faith in Christ Jesus, that we may be declared righteous due to faith toward Christ..."
John 3:16Â “For God loved the world so much that he gave his only-begotten Son, in order that everyone exercising faith in him might not be destroyed but have everlasting life"
Hebrews11:1" Faith is the assured expectation of things hoped for, the evident demonstration of realities though not beheld"
If you continue on in Hebrews it gives some good examples of faith. But the basics is believe in God and Jesus - and that God allowed Jesus to die for our sins. Even though we can't see God or Jesus and we weren't there when Jesus was sacrificed, we have faith that he existed and was doing God's will.

Specificly, believe that he is the messiah who was promised from creation, the embodiment of deity in human flesh.
Just believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me. Or at least believe because of what you have seen me do.
The truth is, anyone who believes in me will do the same works I have done, and even greater works, because I am going to be with the Father. You can ask for anything in my name, and I will do it, because the work of the Son brings glory to the Father. Yes, ask anything in my name, and I will do it!

Jesus told His Disciples to believe in Him and God. He explained to them that He is to be in them as a sign of the covenant of God.
Matthew 20:26-27
26 While they were eating, Jesus took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, "Take and eat; this is my body."
27 Then he took the cup, gave thanks and offered it to them, saying, "Drink from it, all of you. 28 This is my blood of the[b] covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins. 29 I tell you, I will not drink of this fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it anew with you in my Father's kingdom."
Take care,
