what format is a typical dvd in? like if i want to burn a dvd that i can play in most dvd players, what format should i get it in?

Unfortunately, that is THE question that has no real solid answer. Not all DVD players and recorders are the same. It all depends on what DVD recorder recorded the disc, what format was used, and what formats other DVD players are comfortable playing. Trust me, it can get complicated and/or exasperating when it comes to which players will play what format. You will just have to experiment.
